Han Daoguo went home and slept until midnight. His wife, Wang Liuer, discussed with him, "Thanks to Ximen Qing, we've made a fortune. We should host a banquet to invite him for a meal, make him happy, and comfort him since he lost his child. Even if it's just to show others that we have a good relationship with the wealthy, setting us apart from others." Han Daoguo said, "I think so too. But the fifth day of the month is unlucky, so let's do it on the sixth day. We'll host a banquet, invite two opera singers, write an invitation, and I'll personally invite Ximen Qing." Wang Liuer said, "Why invite opera singers? What if he drinks too much and shows up at our house? That wouldn’t be convenient. Next door, Le San's wife has a daughter named Shen Erjie, who is young, can sing, and is also blind. Let's invite her to sing; it will be easy to send her home." Han Daoguo said, "Alright."
The next day, Han Daoguo went to the shop, asked Wen Xiucai to write an invitation, and personally delivered it to Ximen Qing, saying, "Tomorrow, my family will host a small banquet, please honor us with your presence." Ximen Qing said, "No need to be so polite, I have nothing to do tomorrow; I'll come by as soon as I'm done at the yamen." Han Daoguo thanked him and left. The next morning, Han Daoguo spent money to have the young apprentice Hu Xiu buy ingredients, instructed the cook to prepare, and sent someone to pick up Shen Erjie. Wang Liuer and the maidservants waited, anticipating Ximen Qing's arrival.
In the afternoon, Ximen Qing's Qin Tong first sent a barrel of grape wine, then Ximen Qing arrived in a cool sedan chair, followed by Dai An and Wang Jing. After getting off the sedan chair, Ximen Qing, wearing a hat, a blue outfit, and black boots, looked lively. Han Daoguo welcomed him inside, exchanged pleasantries, and said, "Thanks for bringing the wine." Ximen Qing sat in the host's chair.
After a while, Wang Liu'er finished dressing up and bowed to Ximen Qing before going back. Wang Jing brought tea, and Han Daoguo first offered a cup to Ximen Qing, then drank himself. After finishing the tea, Han Daoguo said, "Thanks to your great kindness, while I am working outside, my wife has always been in your care, and Wang Jing has also benefited from your support. I can't thank you enough. I heard about your child's passing a few days ago, and we had some matters to attend to, so I hope you won't hold it against us. I came to celebrate with you and to apologize." Ximen Qing replied, "No need to be so polite." At that moment, Wang Liu'er sat down as well. Ximen Qing asked Han Daoguo, "Have you talked to your dad?" Han Daoguo replied, "Not yet." Ximen Qing asked, "About what?" Wang Liu'er said, "He wants to invite two girls to serve you, but I thought it would be inconvenient, so I didn’t invite them. The neighbor, the Le family, has a daughter, Sister Shen Er, who can sing all sorts of songs. I heard her singing at home a few days ago, and she sings way better than Sister Yu. I would like to invite her to sing for you; what do you think? If that’s okay, I’ll ask her to come over tomorrow to sing for your wife and the others too." Ximen Qing said, "Having her here would be even better; bring her out so I can see her."
Han Daoguo asked Dai An to assist Ximen Qing in taking off his clothes, prepare the banquet, and Hu Xiu served the dishes. Wang Liu'er opened the wine and warmed it, pouring it into cups nearby. Han Daoguo poured wine for Ximen Qing and then called for Shen Erjie to come out. When Ximen Qing saw her, Shen Erjie was beautifully dressed and bowed to him. Ximen Qing asked her age and how many songs she could sing. Shen Erjie said she was twenty-one and could sing over a hundred songs. Ximen Qing asked Han Daoguo to arrange a seat for her. After Shen Erjie greeted him, she took her seat, first playing the zither and performing a piece titled "Autumn Fragrance Pavilion," then had her meal and sang another piece titled "Half Ten Thousand Thieves." After three rounds of drinks, Ximen Qing said, "Take away the zither and bring her a pipa, let her sing some lighter songs." Shen Erjie played and sang a song titled "Four Not Responding • Mountain Slope Sheep." Han Daoguo asked Wang Liu'er to fill Ximen Qing's cup. Wang Liu'er asked, "Shen Erjie, can you sing 'Locking the Southern Branch' for the old man?" Shen Erjie then sang "Locking the Southern Branch":
When we first met, it was such a delight, youthful and vibrant, still in my youth. Two dark locks like clouds, a hint of red on my lips, my face rivals that of peach blossoms and tender bamboo shoots. If born in a painted pavilion, I would indeed be a lady of distinction. Unfortunately, in Zhangtai, I've become of a lower status. But being able to remarry and live respectably is better than discarding the old for the new.
When we first met, how charming it was, with a moon-like face and flower-like beauty, the least among the dust and wind. A slim waist, just enough to sketch, a clever heart that is hard to learn; I only regret not meeting him earlier. Often I complain at the banquet, lightly sipping and singing while cuddling. A single glance reveals the truth, a look brings satisfaction. Though it's just a fleeting joy, I'll use it to ease my worries and sorrows.
Ximen Qing listened to "Locking the South Branch" and thought about how he had just married Zheng Yue'er, feeling very pleased. Wang Liu'er filled his cup again and said, "Father, take your time drinking. Sister Shen can sing many more tunes. If you're free tomorrow, let’s invite her to sing for your wife and the others; she’ll surely sing better than Sister Yu." Ximen Qing asked, "Sister Shen, I'll send someone to pick you up on the Double Ninth Festival, will you come?" Sister Shen replied, "Of course, I wouldn’t dare not to come!" Seeing her cleverness, Ximen Qing was very happy.
After a while, everyone was toasting each other, and Wang Liu'er found it awkward to speak just then, so she let Ximen Qing sing a few verses. Then, Wang Liu'er quietly said to Han Daoguo, "Let the servant Zhao Di take Sister Le San home to rest." Just before they left, Ximen Qing took out a packet of three taels of silver coins from his sleeve and gave it to Zhao Di to buy strings for her zither. Sister Shen quickly bowed to thank him. Ximen Qing added, "On the eighth day, I’ll have someone come to invite you." Wang Liu'er said, "The master only asked me to let Wang Jing know, and at that time I'll have the servant go invite him." After that, Sister Shen went next door. Han Daoguo told his wife about this and then went back to the shop to sleep, leaving only his wife at the table to drink and play dice with Ximen Qing. After a while, both of them started to feel a little romantic. Ximen Qing got up to change into something more comfortable and then entered Han's wife's room, where they could be alone together. Wang Jing then brought out the lamps and candles to drink with Dai An and Qin Tong in the front room.
That young man Hu Xiu sneaked a few bowls of wine in the kitchen, sent the cook away, and ran next door to Wang Luer's room to sleep on a mat on the floor. After sleeping for a while, he suddenly heard voices coming from the woman's chamber and saw light coming through the cracks in the wall. He thought it must be Ximen Qing, while Han Daoguo was likely asleep in the other room. He secretly used the hairpin on his head to poke a hole in the paper on the wall and peeked through. He saw the room lit up; Ximen Qing and Han's wife were in there... Han's wife's various flirtatious tones could be heard. After a while, Han's wife said, "My dear! If you want to burn that hussy to death, go ahead and burn whichever part you want; she won't stop you. Anyway, her body belongs to you, what is there to fear?" Ximen Qing said, "I'm worried your family will get mad." Han's wife said, "That coward doesn't have the guts! What does he even live on?" Ximen Qing said, "Since you are wholeheartedly with me, after we send him and Lai Bao away this time, we’ll let him stay down south for a while to do some buying." Han's wife said, "Let him leave after some time. Don’t let him sit around at home! He's used to being outside and wants to stay there. If you look after him, that’d be perfect! When he comes back, I’ll find someone else for him; I don’t want him around anymore, I'll be devoted to you, wherever you want me to be. If I ever lie, let me rot!" Ximen Qing said, "My child, stop making vows!" Hu Xiu heard every move and word from the two of them clearly.
Han Daoguo returned home and did not see Hu Xiu. He thought he must have gone to sleep in the shop. He went to the satin shop and asked Wang Xian and Rong Hai, both said Hu Xiu hadn't shown up. Han Daoguo went back home, opened the door, and looked everywhere for Hu Xiu but couldn't find him. He only saw Wang Jing drinking with Dai An and Qin Tong in the front room. When Hu Xiu heard Han Daoguo's voice return, he quickly feigned sleep. After a short while, Han Daoguo lit a lamp and discovered the Buddha hall. He saw Hu Xiu sleeping soundly, so he gave him a kick to wake him up and scolded him, "You lazy bum, get up! I thought you were sleeping in the shop, but here you are, sleeping like a log! Get up and come with me!" Hu Xiu rubbed his eyes and groggily followed Han Daoguo to the shop.
Ximen Qing and Mrs. Han took an hour to finish. Then they burned incense at three spots: Wang Liuer's heart, navel, and coccyx. Mrs. Han put on her clothes, had the maid bring water for her to wash her hands, warmed up the wine, and served some delicious dishes, while the two continued to exchange sweet nothings. After eating for a while, they got up and rode home on horseback, with Dai An, Wang Jing, and Qin Tong following. When they got home, it was already past midnight. Ximen Qing went to Li Ping-er's room. Li Ping-er was lying in bed, and seeing him stumble in drunk, she asked, "Where did you drink today?" Ximen Qing said, "Han Daoguo invited me for a drink. He noticed I was troubled about the child, so he helped me relax. He also invited a young lady, Shen Erjie, who sang really well! Tomorrow is the Double Ninth Festival; I'll have the servants carry a sedan chair to bring her home, let her sing for two days to lift your spirits. Don't keep thinking about those unhappy things." He then wanted to call Yingchun to help him get undressed so he could sleep with Li Ping-er. Li Ping-er said, "Don't talk! I'm not feeling well lately; the maid is brewing medicine for me. Go sleep in another room. You see me looking fine all day, yet I'm actually very upset inside, and you still come to pester me." Ximen Qing said, "My darling! I can't bear to be away from you. I just want to sleep with you, what should I do?" Li Ping-er glanced at him, smiled, and said, "Who believes your flowery words? You won't truly miss me until I'm gone!" She added, "Wait until I'm feeling better, then you can come in and sleep with me." Ximen Qing sat for a while and said, "Alright, alright. If you don't want me, I'll go sleep at Pan Liu'er's place." Li Ping-er said, "Go ahead, so you won't feel wronged. She's waiting for you; if you don't go, you'll come bother me." Ximen Qing said, "If that's what you say, then I won't be going." Li Ping-er smiled and said, "Just kidding, go on." So Ximen Qing left. Li Ping-er got up, sat on the bed, and Yingchun served her the medicine. She picked up the medicine, couldn't hold back her tears, let out a deep sigh, and then drank the medicine.
That's right:
I have countless sorrows in my heart; I express them to the oriole's song.
As soon as Ximen Qing entered, he said, "Wife, are you going to bed so early?" Jinlian replied, "Oh, what brings you here?" Then she asked him, "Which friend’s house did you drink at today?" Ximen Qing said, "Han Lao Di came from the south, saw that I had no children, so he invited me to have a drink and unwind, and also had him go out for a trip." Jinlian said, "He's outside, and you're taking care of his wife?" Ximen Qing replied, "That doesn’t make sense; he’s just a friend!" Jinlian said, "What’s wrong with being friends? I’m worried you might be crossing a line! You’re still trying to lie to me, aren’t you? I know everything! On your birthday, that vixen Li Ping'er wasn't there? You secretly gave Li Ping'er a birthday hairpin to wear, Big Madam, Meng San'er, who didn't see it? Ask them, their faces turned red, didn’t they tell you? Where have you been messing around today? You shameless jerk! That pretty, flowery getup! What a good wife, huh? Just a little tramp! I don't care what you like about her! Even your spineless brother-in-law is in on this, always letting him pass messages to you!" Ximen Qing refused to admit it, smiling and saying, "Nonsense, that's impossible! Today he accompanied me for a drink and didn't go out." Jinlian said, "Are you still lying to me? Who doesn't know his husband is a useless man, herding sheep and gambling, leaving his wife to you, hoping you'll make money! You fool, always listening to gossip!" Ximen Qing stripped off his clothes and sat on the edge of the bed. Jinlian touched his private part, saying, "Here we go again! You're like a boiled duck, still in denial! Mixing with that vixen until so late before coming back, still in denial! You swear it, and I’ll have Chunmei get you a glass of cold water; you drink it, then I’ll believe you. Let me tell you, that’s just pointless! If you really are like this, you could have seduced every wife in the world! Shameless thing! A pervert! If you were a man, if you were a woman, you could have seduced the whole street!" Ximen Qing just grinned sheepishly.
Once in bed, Jin Lian asked Chun Mei to bring hot wine, took a medicinal pill, lay down, and said to Jin Lian, "Wife, go down and serve me for a bit; it’s up to your skills." Jin Lian feigned anger and replied, "You’re out there with that vixen and expect me to serve you? It makes me sick!" Ximen Qing retorted, "Nonsense, that’s ridiculous!" Jin Lian replied, "Not true? Swear it!" After some passionate moments, Ximen Qing wanted to wash his hands, but he hesitated... The two of them tossed and turned for most of the night before finally falling asleep.
Before we knew it, it was the Double Ninth Festival. Ximen Qing said to Wu Yue Niang, "Brother Han treated me to drinks a couple of days ago and introduced me to a gorgeous and talented singer named Shen Er Jie. I had someone bring her over to sing for a couple of days for you all to enjoy." He also instructed the kitchen to prepare a sumptuous feast and set up a banquet in the garden for the whole family to celebrate the Double Ninth Festival.
Soon after, Wang Jing brought Shen Erjie over. Shen Erjie greeted Lady Yu and the others. Lady Yu noticed she was young and beautiful and asked her what songs she knew. She didn't know many songs, but she did know several little tunes. They first served her some tea snacks, and she sang a couple of songs in the backyard before going to the garden to set up a banquet. That day, Ximen Qing stayed home instead of going to the yamen, admiring the chrysanthemums. He invited Lady Yu, Li Jiaor, Meng Yulou, Pan Jinlian, Li Ping'er, Sun Xue'e, and the eldest sister for a meal, while Chunmei, Yuxiao, Yingchun, and Lanxiang poured wine on the side. Shen Erjie first played the pipa and sang a tune. Li Ping'er arrived a little later, feeling unwell. She forced herself to stay with Ximen Qing, barely touching her drink. Ximen Qing and Lady Yu saw her looking worried and said, "Sister Li, just relax and enjoy Shen Erjie’s singing." Yulou chimed in, "Just tell her what you want to hear." Li Ping'er stayed quiet. Just then, while they were drinking, Wang Jing came and said, "Ying La'er and Chang La'er have arrived." Ximen Qing said, "Ask them to sit in the small pavilion; I'll be there soon." Wang Jing said, "Chang La'er brought two boxes." Ximen Qing said to Lady Yu, "They’re here to thank me for helping them with their houses." Lady Yu said, "Make sure to treat them well, and don’t let them leave empty-handed! You go entertain them; I'll instruct the preparation of dishes." Before he left, Ximen Qing said to Shen Erjie, "Sing something nice for Liu Niang to enjoy." After he left, Jinlian urged, "Sister Li, just say what you want to hear! Let Shen Erjie sing; don’t waste her kindness! You invited her, but you're not saying anything." Li Ping'er was pressured and finally said after a while, "Sing 'Purple Street, Red Dust'." Shen Erjie said, "No problem, I know it." She picked up the zither and sang a song. After singing, Lady Yu said, "Sister Li, good wine, have a drink." Li Ping'er didn’t dare to refuse, took a sip, and put it down again. She didn’t stay long before she felt worse and headed back to her room.
Ximen Qing came to the small pavilion, Feixuexuan, and saw Ying Bojue and Chang Zhijie enjoying chrysanthemums. There were twenty pots of seven-foot-tall chrysanthemums on both sides of the pine wall, featuring a variety of species, including Dahongpao, Zhuangyuanhong, Zipaojindai, Baifenxi, Huangfenxi, Mantianxing, Zuiyangfei, Yumudan, Emaochu, Yuanyanghua, and more. When Ximen Qing arrived, the two quickly stood up to greet him. Chang Zhijie had someone bring in a large box. Ximen Qing asked, "What’s this delicious treat?" Bojue said, "Brother Chang is grateful for your care; he just bought a house, and there's not much I can do to repay you, so his wife made some crabs and roast duck, inviting you and me to have a meal." Ximen Qing said, "Brother Chang, why bother? Your wife just recovered from illness, and you’re making her worry again!" Bojue replied, "I advised him the same, but he said you might not like anything else." Ximen Qing had the box opened to reveal forty large crabs, all cleaned and stuffed with meat, coated in spices, ginger, garlic, and flour, fried, and then seasoned with soy sauce and vinegar, which looked incredibly appetizing. There were also two large and fat roast ducks. Ximen Qing was delighted and had Chunhong and Wang Jing take the food inside, gave the box carriers fifty wen as a reward, and then thanked Chang Zhijie.
Qin Tong pulled back the curtain and invited them into the Feicui Pavilion. The Earl kept praising the stunning chrysanthemums and asked Ximen Qing, "Where did you get these flowers?" Ximen Qing said, "They were sent by the eunuch Liu from the brick factory. These twenty pots were sent all at once." The Earl said, "The flowers don't matter, but this pot is an official kiln double-hoop Dengjiang pot, polished with silk, made by stepping on mud and firing, using the same technique as that for Suzhou's Dengjiang bricks. It's hard to find now!" After the praise, Ximen Qing had tea served. He then asked Chang Zhijie, "When are you moving in?" The Earl said, "I will move in three days after paying. I chose an auspicious day, bought some odds and ends, and the shop is now open. Chang Er's brother-in-law is helping him watch the shop." Ximen Qing said, "I will buy some gifts another day, not too many guests, just invite Xie Zichun and a few others. I will have the food sent over; don't trouble Chang Er again. Call a few more prostitutes; we'll help liven up the place and have a good time." Chang Zhijie said, "I want to invite you too, but I haven't had the courage; the place is too small, afraid of neglecting you." Ximen Qing said, "No need to be polite, you don't have to worry about it. Let's call Xie Zichun now and discuss together." He then instructed Qin Tong, "Go invite Xie Dad!" The Earl asked, "Brother, who do you plan to invite that day?" Ximen Qing smiled and said, "Let's invite Zheng Yuer and Hong Sier." The Earl said, "Brother, you didn't even tell me when you invited them; how was I supposed to know? How do they compare to Li Gua'er in terms of skills?" Ximen Qing said, "They are absolute stunners; there's no comparison!" The Earl said, "Why were they so cold and reluctant on your birthday, also a debauched lot?" Ximen Qing said, "I will go again another day and bring you along. You and Sister Yue played well in Double Six; you can play together." The Earl said, "I’ll go meet that little minx when the time comes; don't let her run away!" Ximen Qing said, "You old dog, don't always think about those things." Just then, Xie Xida arrived, exchanged pleasantries before sitting down. Ximen Qing said, "Chang Er has moved to a new house, keeping it a secret from us; he has already moved. Let's each contribute some money; don't bother him anymore. I've got everything set here; I will have things carried to his house and invite a few more prostitutes. What do you say to making it a fun day?" Xie Xida said, "Brother, you tell us how much each person should contribute; we will all send it to you. And who else is coming?" Ximen Qing said, "Just these three or four; two taels of silver each should do." The Earl said, "Ten people would be too much; his place is pretty small."
Sorry, but it seems the text for translation is missing. Could you send me the Simplified Chinese text? I’ll be happy to translate it for you. Looking forward to your text!
Just as they were talking, the young musician came in and said, "Uncle Wu has arrived." Ximen Qing said, "Please have Uncle Wu come in." A moment later, Uncle Wu entered, greeted everyone, and exchanged pleasantries with Ximen Qing. Tea was served, and after finishing the tea, Uncle Wu stood up and said, "Please come with me for a few words." Ximen Qing quickly led Uncle Wu to the back room. Madam Ximen was still in the pavilion drinking and watching the show with her sisters. Upon hearing that Uncle Wu had arrived and Ximen Qing was talking to him in the back, she went to the upper room, greeted Uncle Wu, and asked Xiaoyu to serve tea. Uncle Wu took out ten taels of silver from his sleeve and handed it to Madam Ximen, saying, "I just received thirty taels from the household yesterday. Brother-in-law, please take these ten taels for now, and I will send the rest next time." Ximen Qing said, "Uncle Wu, why are you so polite? Please use it first, no rush!" Uncle Wu said, "I’m worried about holding up your business, brother-in-law." Ximen Qing asked, "How is the warehouse construction going?" Uncle Wu said, "It will take another month to complete." Ximen Qing said, "When it's finished, there will surely be some rewards." Uncle Wu said, "The military and civil service exams are coming up this year. I hope brother-in-law can help me and speak for me." Ximen Qing said, "Uncle Wu, you can count on me."
After finishing speaking, Yue Niang said, "Please ask Uncle to come sit up front with us." Uncle said, "I think I'll head out; I don't want to interrupt your conversation." Ximen Qing said, "No worries. Brother Chang borrowed some money from me recently to buy a house and has already moved in. He came today to thank me and to get everyone together. Uncle's presence is just right." So he invited Uncle to sit up front. Yue Niang quickly called the kitchen to get the dishes ready. Qintong and Wang Jing set the table, and Ximen Qing asked someone to open the storeroom and take out a jar of chrysanthemum wine sent by Judge Xia. When the jar was opened, a delightful fragrance filled the air; it wasn't filtered, so they first added a bottle of cold water to remove the spiciness, then filtered it with a cloth bag, resulting in a rich, flavorful wine that was even better than grape wine. He asked Wang Jing to pour a cup with a small golden cup, first for Uncle Wu to taste, then the Earl and the others also tried it, all praising it endlessly. After a bit, the dishes were served, and everyone dug in. Then they brought out crabs and roast duck, and the Earl insisted Uncle eat first. Even Xie Xi remarked he had never had anything so delicious and crispy. Ximen Qing said, "This is from Brother Chang." Uncle said, "I've lived fifty-two years and never knew crabs could be made like this; it's absolutely delicious!" The Earl then asked, "Have the ladies in the back tried it?" Ximen Qing said, "They've all tried it." The Earl said, "Sister Chang really knows her stuff!" Chang Zhi Jie smiled and said, "If it’s not up to par, I hope you all can forgive me."
After eating the crab, someone next to him came over to pour wine. Ximen Qing asked Chunhong and Shutong to take turns singing Nanqu to liven things up. Ying Bojue suddenly heard the sound of the zither and singing from the inner room, so he asked Ximen Qing, "Brother, is Li Guijie here today? Otherwise, how could there be such good music?" Ximen Qing said, "Listen closely and see if you can tell who it is." Bojue said, "It's not Li Guijie, it's Wu Yiner." Ximen Qing said, "You're just guessing! It's a young lady." Bojue said, "Is it Yu Dajie?" Ximen Qing said, "It's not her either—this is Shen Erjie. She's young, beautiful, and can sing." Bojue said, "Is she really that good? Brother, why don’t you let her come out so we can see her? Let her sing a few songs for us to enjoy." Ximen Qing said, "Today you ladies are celebrating; I specially invited her to play, with your keen nose, always so sharp!" Bojue said, "I've got eyes like a hawk and ears like a fox; even if there are bees buzzing forty miles away, I can hear it!" Xie Xida said, "You, your ears are like bamboo sticks, afraid of not hearing!" The two of them joked for a while, and Bojue said, "Brother, just let her come out for us to see; we won't embarrass her, just let her sing a few songs for the old uncle to listen to, don't be too strict." Ximen Qing couldn't say no to him, so he let Wang Jing lead Shen Erjie out to sing for Bojue. After a while, Shen Erjie arrived, bowed, and took a seat in the chair beside her. Bojue asked Shen Erjie, "How old are you?" Shen Erjie answered, "I'm a cow in the zodiac, twenty-one years old." He asked again, "How many songs can you sing?" Shen Erjie said, "I can play various tunes on the pipa and zither, about a hundred or so." Bojue said, "That's plenty for you to know." Ximen Qing said, "Shen Erjie, play the pipa and sing a little something, but don't overdo it. I heard you can sing 'Four Dreams Eight Emptiness'; sing a section for the uncle." Then he told Wang Jing and Shutong to pour some wine. Shen Erjie, wearing beautiful clothes, gently opened her mouth and began to sing softly, while everyone drank and listened.
Li Ping'er returned to the room, just sat on the toilet, and it felt like she was continuously urinating. Suddenly, she felt lightheaded and her vision went black. She stood up to dress, but suddenly felt dizzy and fell to the ground. Fortunately, Yingchun was there to support her, so she didn't fall more seriously, only grazing her forehead. Yingchun and the nurse helped her onto the bed, and she fainted for a while. Yingchun was frightened and hurriedly told Xiuchun, "Quick, go tell the madam!" Xiuchun ran to the banquet hall and explained the situation to Lady Yuelao and the others. Lady Yuelao set down her wine glass and hurried over to see Li Ping'er with her sisters. They saw Yingchun and the nurse supporting an unconscious Li Ping'er as she sat on the bed. Lady Yuelao asked, "She was fine when she entered the room, how did she suddenly become like this?" Yingchun lifted the toilet lid to show Lady Yuelao, which startled her. Lady Yuelao said, "She probably drank too much, causing her blood pressure to spike, which resulted in so much bleeding." Yulou and Jinlian both said, "When did she drink so much?" as they prepared some ginger soup to help her. After a while, Li Ping'er finally woke up and could speak. Lady Yuelao asked, "Sister Li, what's wrong with you?" Li Ping'er said, "I don't know what's going on. I just got up from the toilet and dressed, and I felt a blackness in front of my eyes, then dizziness and fainting." Lady Yuelao instructed An'er to "fetch your father and have him call a doctor for you." Li Ping'er chided, "Don't make a fuss; let him enjoy his drink." Lady Yuelao told Yingchun, "Make up the bed for her to rest." Since Lady Yuelao couldn't drink anymore, she instructed everyone to pack up and head back.
In the evening, Ximen Qing had dinner with Wu Dajiu and the others, then returned to Yu Niang's room. Yu Niang told Ximen Qing what had happened to Li Ping'er. Ximen Qing quickly went to check on Li Ping'er. Seeing her lying on the bed, with a pale face, she clutched Ximen Qing's sleeve and cried. Ximen Qing asked her what happened, and Li Ping'er said, "I was sitting on the toilet in the room, and I don't know what happened; I kept feeling a flow like I was urinating, then everything went black in front of me. When I stood up to get dressed, I felt dizzy and then fell down." Ximen Qing noticed a cut on her forehead and said, "The maids were right there, why didn’t they help you and stop you from falling?" Li Ping'er replied, "Fortunately, the older maids were all there with the wet nurse helping me; otherwise, I don't know how badly I would have been hurt." Ximen Qing said, "I'll have Dr. Ren come to check on you tomorrow morning." That night, Ximen Qing slept in the bed across from Li Ping'er.
The next morning, Ximen Qing went to the government office and casually instructed the qintong to invite Doctor Ren. He only arrived at noon. Ximen Qing first hosted him for tea in the hall, then had a servant take him inside. Li Ping'er’s room was tidied up and filled with the fragrance of incense before inviting Doctor Ren in. After examining the pulse, Doctor Ren walked to the hall and said to Ximen Qing, "The old lady's pulse is significantly heavier than before. The seven emotions have affected the liver, and excessive heat in the lungs has caused the liver to become overactive, resulting in a weak spleen and a chaotic heat in the blood, akin to an uncontrollable landslide. If the blood that flows out is purple, it can still be adjusted; if it is bright red, then it is fresh blood. I will prescribe some medicine, and if it can stop the bleeding even slightly, there is still hope; otherwise, the prognosis is uncertain." Ximen Qing replied, "Please, esteemed doctor, take great care in your treatment, and I will be sure to reward you handsomely!" Doctor Ren said, "Not at all! We have a good relationship and established ties; I will certainly do my utmost." After sending off Doctor Ren, Ximen Qing gave him a piece of Hangzhou silk and two taels of silver, then asked the qintong to bring the medicine known as "Gui Pi Decoction." Li Ping'er took it, but the bleeding still would not stop. Ximen Qing grew increasingly anxious and called for Doctor Hu to examine her. Doctor Hu explained that it was due to qi clashing with the blood vessels and heat entering the blood system, and he also prescribed medicine. However, after taking the medicine, it was as if a stone had sunk into the sea, having no effect whatsoever.
Madame Yue saw the chaos caused by calling for a doctor, so she allowed Shen Erjie to stay for just one night. She gave her five silver coins, a luxurious brocade jacket, and some jewelry, all packed in a box, and sent her back in a sedan chair. Since that day when Hua Zi drank alcohol, he heard that Li Ping'er was sick, so he had Hua Dashi buy two boxes of gifts to visit her. Seeing Li Ping'er looking thin and pale, not as lively as before, they both ended up crying together in the room. Madame Yue poured tea for Hua Zi from behind. Han Daoguo said, "There's a skilled gynecologist named Zhao outside Dongmen, who is highly skilled in treating gynecological diseases. Two years ago, when my wife had irregular menstruation, he cured her. Sir, please invite him to see Li Ping'er; I guarantee she will get better." Upon hearing this, Ximen Qing sent Qin Tong and Wang Jing to invite Zhao the physician from outside the gate. Ximen Qing discussed with Ying Bojue, saying, "Li Ping'er’s illness is getting worse; what are we going to do?" Bojue was shocked and said, "I heard that Li Ping'er’s illness was getting better; how did it become worse again?" Ximen Qing said, "Since the child was lost, she has been very sad, and her illness has come back. On the day of the Double Ninth Festival, I took Shen Erjie to accompany her to cheer her up, but she didn’t really drink much. As a result, she fainted when she returned to the room and even injured her face. I had Doctor Ren come in, who said her pulse was weaker than before. After taking the medicine, the bleeding increased even more." Bojue asked, "Did you invite Doctor Hu to see her? What did he say?" Ximen Qing said, "Doctor Hu said it was a collision of qi and blood, but his medicine didn't work either. Today, Han Huoji said there's a physician named Zhao Longgang outside the gate who specializes in gynecological diseases, so I sent someone to invite him. I'm so anxious I'm at my wit's end because of this child. Women, they're so stubborn; I can't persuade her, there's just no way to change her mind."
As they were speaking, Ping'an came to report: "Mr. Qiao has arrived." Ximen Qing hastily ushered him into the main hall, along with the Count, where they greeted him and took their seats. Mr. Qiao said, "I heard that Madam Liu has not been feeling well, so I came to visit." Ximen Qing replied, "Yes, ever since she lost the child, she has been very sorrowful. Her health was already not great, and now it has actually worsened. I really appreciate your concern." Mr. Qiao asked, "Have you had a doctor check on her?" Ximen Qing said, "She has been taking medicine from Doctor Ren all along. Yesterday, we also consulted Mr. Hu, but her condition actually got worse after taking the medicine. Today, we have invited Zhao Longgang, a specialist in gynecology." Mr. Qiao suggested, "There's an old doctor named Mr. He who lives near the county gate, and he is very skilled in medicine. His son, He Qixuan, is also an official physician. Why not invite him to take a look?" Ximen Qing agreed, "Alright, we will wait for Zhao Longgang to arrive, then we will invite him." Mr. Qiao continued, "I think it’d be better to have Mr. He come first, and then wait for Zhao Longgang. Let them both diagnose together, identify the root cause of the illness, and prescribe the appropriate treatment. It will definitely be effective." Ximen Qing said, "You are right." He immediately sent Dai'an with a note to ask Mr. Qiao to help invite Mr. He.
Not long after, Mr. He arrived. He greeted Ximen Qing and Mr. Qiao, and took a seat of honor. Ximen Qing stood up and said, "I haven't seen you in many years; you look even more lively now." Mr. Qiao asked, "How is your son doing?" Mr. He replied, "He is very busy in the county every day, no free time. But I'm still out here seeing patients." The Count remarked, "At your age, you’re still so healthy." Mr. He said, "I am eighty-one years old this year." After some pleasantries and tea, a servant led Mr. He to the inner room. Soon, Mr. He came out from the inner room, and Mrs. Li was so thin she was almost unrecognizable, her face as pale as parchment, her body as frail as a silver thread. Her once plump figure had withered away, losing its former luster. Distantly, she heard the sound of something falling, and she dimly saw fireflies flickering. Her pulse was weak and faint, her spirit elusive. The grim reapers were already at her door, and even the best doctors were struggling to help her.
After Mr. He finished examining her pulse, he came out and told Ximen Qing and Qiao Yuanwai, "This lady's condition was caused by a conflict of qi and blood, followed by anger. This conflict caused her to bleed continuously. I wonder if this was the original cause of her illness?" Ximen Qing asked, "So, what should we do to treat it?"
As they were speaking, someone announced: "Qintong and Wang Jing have invited Mr. Zhao." Mr. He asked, "Who is he?" Ximen Qing said, "He is also a doctor recommended by our colleague; you can act as if you don't know him. After he checks your pulse, you can discuss it with him to find the right treatment." After a while, Doctor Zhao arrived. After Ximen Qing greeted him, everyone introduced themselves. Mr. He and Exalted Qiao sat in the middle, Doctor Zhao sat on the left, the Earl on the right, and Ximen Qing sat in the main seat with them. After having tea, Doctor Zhao asked, "What are your honorable surnames?" Exalted Qiao said, "One of us is surnamed He, and the other is surnamed Qiao." The Earl said, "My surname is Ying. I believe this must be Mr. Zhao Longgang." Doctor Zhao replied, "Longgang is my courtesy name. I earn my living as a physician. My ancestors were officials in the Imperial Medical Bureau, and my father was a royal physician in Ruzhou. Our family has been in the medical profession for three generations. I read every book without exception every day, including the 'Wang Shuhe Pulse Classic,' 'Dongyuan's Herbal Remedies for Famine,' 'Huangdi's Inner Canon,' 'Nanjing,' 'The Book of Living,' 'Danxi's Heart Method,' 'Danxi's Hand Mirror,' 'Jie Gu Old Man's Pulse Formula,' 'Treatise on Febrile Diseases,' 'Essentials of Golden Coffer,' 'Thousand Gold Prescriptions,' 'Divine Prescriptions for Longevity,' and 'Sea Treasure Classic.' I use practical methods and medicines, and the pulse feels like divine calculation in my hands. The six energies and four seasons distinguish the patterns of yin and yang; the seven surfaces and eight distances determine the fluctuations of the pulse. The symptoms of wind, deficiency, cold, and heat are all apparent; the pulse theories of string, flooding, and leather are fully understood. I struggle with words and find it hard to explain clearly." Mr. He asked, "What do you look at first when diagnosing?" Doctor Zhao said, "The ancients taught 'observe, listen, inquire, and palpate.' I first ask about the illness, then check the pulse, and also observe the complexion. It's like a fortune teller interpreting the eight characters; only then can an accurate diagnosis be made." Mr. He said, "That's perfect; please go inside and have a look." Ximen Qing told Qintong, "Stop chattering, Mr. Zhao is here."
After a while, Ximen Qing accompanied Doctor Zhao into Li Ping'er's room. Li Ping'er had just fallen asleep, so they gently helped her sit up against the pillow. Doctor Zhao first examined her left hand, then her right hand, and then said, "Madam, please lift your head so I can see your complexion." Li Ping'er lifted her head. Doctor Zhao said to Ximen Qing, "Sir, why don't you ask her who I am?" Ximen Qing asked Li Ping'er, "Can you tell me who this is?" Li Ping'er looked up and whispered, "He's the doctor, right?" Doctor Zhao reassured, "It's alright, she can still recognize people." Ximen Qing said, "Doctor Zhao, please take a careful look, I sincerely thank you." After observing for a while, Doctor Zhao said, "Madam's illness, forgive me for being blunt, judging from her complexion and pulse, it's not typhoid fever; it's a complex condition, not postpartum, definitely a pre-pregnancy disease." Ximen Qing said, "It's not that illness. Doctor, please take another look." Doctor Zhao pondered for a moment and said, "With this yellow complexion, it might be spleen deficiency with diarrhea, or irregular menstruation." Ximen Qing said, "To tell you the truth, Liu Niangzi has prolonged menstrual bleeding, that's why her body is so weak. Do you have any urgent remedies? I would be very grateful." Doctor Zhao said, "Indeed it's irregular menstruation, nothing serious, I have medicine."
Ximen Qing brought Doctor Zhao to the front hall, where Qiao Dahuzi and Master He asked what illness he had. Doctor Zhao said, "I believe it's gonorrhea." Master He asked, "What medicine should be used to treat it?" Doctor Zhao said, "I have an effective prescription, which includes several herbs; once taken, it will surely work. Listen carefully: licorice, mirabilite, gongshi, rhubarb, croton, and chrysanthemum, mixed with ginger juice and half-dried pinellia, then add aconite, almond, and gastrodia. Mix these herbs together, make them into pills with onion and honey, and take them with warm liquor first thing in the morning."
Mr. He listened and said, "I'm afraid it might be too strong to take?" Mr. Zhao replied, "Since ancient times, good medicine may taste bitter, but it's good for the illness; how can you not take it?" Seeing that he's just talking nonsense, and also because this was recommended by Manager Han, Mr. Ximen didn’t want to just kick him out, so he gave him two silver coins and sent him away. Then he said to Mr. Qiao, "This guy doesn't know anything about medicine." Mr. He said, "I hesitated to say earlier, this person is Zhao Daogui, a well-known quack outside Dongmen, who makes a living conning people on the street. He doesn’t know the first thing about pulse diagnosis or pathology!" He then said, "I will go home and get two sets of medicine for Madam. If the dripping symptoms ease up after taking the medicine and the chest feels more comfortable, then you can continue with the medication. Just be careful if the symptoms don’t go away; that could be a problem." After saying that, he got up to leave.
Ximen Qing gave him a tael of silver and asked Daian to take the box to get the medicine. In the evening, Li Pinger took the medicine, but there was no reaction at all. Wu Yueniang said, "Don't give her random medicine anymore. She has digestive issues, and she doesn't know what's in her stomach. You're just making her suffer with medicine. Wu Shenxian said before that she would have a life-threatening event at the age of thirty-nine, but she's only twenty-seven this year! You should find Wu Shenxian again and have him assess her fortune for this year. Maybe she has offended some stars and needs to ward off disasters and pray for blessings." Ximen Qing immediately sent someone to Zhou Shoubei's mansion to inquire. The messenger reported back, "Wu Shenxian travels around the world, and his whereabouts are uncertain. If he is in the local area, he is usually near the city's south land temple. After April this year, he went to Wudang Mountain. If you want a fortune-telling, there's a Mr. Huang outside the Zhenwu Temple who is accurate; he charges three taels of silver per reading and doesn't do door-to-door calculations." Ximen Qing immediately sent Chen Jingji to Mr. Huang's house north of the Zhenwu Temple with three taels of silver. There was a sign on Mr. Huang's door: "Calculating innate numerology, three taels of gold per fate hexagram." Chen Jingji went forward, handed over the gold, and said, "I would like to ask Mr. Huang to calculate a hexagram." Then he wrote down Li Pinger's birth date and time for him: female, twenty-seven years old, January 15th, noon. Mr. Huang calculated for a while and said, "This fate, Xinyin year, Gengyin month, Xinmao day, Jawu hour, should adopt the seal and tranquilize the pattern, borrowing four years to run. At ages 4, 14, 24, and 34, significant events occur. This year, the current year is Dingyou, with the assistance of the shoulder, the year's injury to the day stem, the calculation of the star shining on the fate, and also offending the funeral door and the five ghosts, disasters and killings. The star of the calculation is the dark star. Its image is like chaotic silk without a head, constantly changing. When encountering it in the great fortune, it mostly indicates ambiguous matters, can lead to illness, and during January, February, March, July, and September, she may face health issues and misfortune. There will be misfortune in small matters, and disputes with others, leading to loss of wealth. This is particularly unfavorable for women." Chen Jingji copied down the hexagram and returned. Ximen Qing was sitting with Ying Bojue and Wen Xiucai when he saw Chen Jingji return with the hexagram, and he asked him to go to the backyard and explain the results of the hexagram to Yueniang.
Seeing Li Ping'er was fated for misfortune, Ximen Qing felt...
Adorned with three yellow braids on the brow; within the heart lies a heavy burden.
In the lyrics it sings:
Ah, so tired I can't even function, not wanting to get up at all, feeling dazed and lazy, half-hidden behind the old curtains. My eyes are strained, only seeing the lush green grass, tears streaming down, soaking the fallen flowers. Remembering the past makes my heart ache terribly, drifting like clouds, like rain, like the wind. The geese returning are counted mournfully from upstairs, and sad tears fall drop by drop, making my heart feel extremely pained.
Pan Jinlian, seeing her child gone, is spirited and particularly happy every day, pointing at the maid and scolding: "You wicked woman! I’ve seen through your usual dishonesty long ago, and today you actually made a mistake again! You're like a pigeon that has dropped its egg—unable to speak; like a spring stool that has broken its back—no chair to sit on; like an old hag who has sold her mill—unable to push it; like a brothel keeper who has lost her main girl—no hope left! How can you be like me!" Li Ping'er listened clearly from inside the room, too afraid to speak, secretly crying. Her heart felt heavy with anger, compounded by sorrow and sadness, her spirit becoming more and more dazed, unable to find peace even in her dreams, and she was eating less and less each day. Ever since the day after Guange's burial, Wu Yiner returned home. Old Feng brought in a thirteen-year-old maid, spending five taels of silver to purchase her from Sun Xue'e, to work in the house, and she was renamed Cui'er.
Li Ping'er, on one hand missing her child, and on the other hand, out of anger, had her old illness flare up again, causing her to bleed continuously. Mr. Ximen Qing invited a doctor to see her, prescribed medicine for her to take, but the medicine had no effect at all; but the more she took, the worse her condition became. In less than two weeks, she had grown so thin that her face was pale, and she was no longer the beauty she once was! Truly, she was skin and bones; how could anyone endure such sorrow? In early September, the weather was cool, the autumn wind blowing. Li Ping'er slept alone in the room at night, the cold, silver bed, moonlight shining through the gauze window. She couldn't help but miss her child, sighing softly, when she thought she heard someone knocking on the window. Li Ping'er called the maid, but everyone was fast asleep and didn’t hear her, so she got out of bed, slipped on her shoes and draped her embroidered coat over her shoulders, and opened the door. Looking out, she thought she saw Hua Zixu holding the official's son, calling out to her, saying he had found a new house and asked her to move in together. Li Ping'er couldn't bear to leave Ximen Qing, refused to leave, held her child close, but was pushed down by Hua Zixu. She woke up in shock, realizing it had all been a dream. Terrified and drenched in sweat, she cried until dawn broke. Truly, she was lost in her emotions and confusion. As the poem goes:
"The slender new moon casts its light on the silver screen,
In the boudoir, a person longs to lose their soul.
Regretting the many fleeting romances,
One must understand that love is the root of all sorrow."
At this time, Lai Bao's cargo ship from Nanjing had arrived again, and a young man named Wang Xian was sent to collect the cart tax and fees. Ximen Qing wrote a letter instructing Rong Hai to take one hundred taels of silver, as well as gifts such as sheep, wine, and silk, to thank the supervisor: "Just let them know that this batch of goods has already been taxed, and I hope you'll show some leniency." The ten shops at home had been renovated and were set to open on the fourth of September, the day the goods were unloaded, with a total of twenty large carts being loaded. That day, over thirty relatives and friends came to give gifts and congratulations, and Xia Tingxi also sent gifts and cash envelopes. Qiao Dahut had invited twelve musicians and acrobats. On Ximen Qing's side, Li Ming, Wu Hui, and Zheng Chun, three young performers, were singing and playing. Gan and Han were selling goods at the counter, one collecting money and the other introducing products, while Cui was in charge of collecting living expenses. Ximen Qing, dressed in a red robe and hat, burned paper money while everyone toasted and congratulated him. Fifteen banquet tables were set up in the backyard, laden with an abundance of dishes and drinks. Everyone drank heartily, and the atmosphere was vibrant. The guests included Qiao Dahut, Wu Dajiu, Wu Erjiu, Hua Dajiu, Shen Yifu, Han Yifu, Wu Daoist, Ni Xiucai, Wen Kuixuan, Ying Baojue, Xie Xida, Chang Zhijie, as well as Li Zhi, Huang Si, Fu Zixin, and other assistants and neighbors, filling up the seats. The three young performers put on a show titled "Nan Lv · Hong Na Ao" before the banquet, singing "The Primordial Beginning of Tai Chi." After a while, following five rounds of drinks and several dishes, the musicians played, the acrobats performed, and everyone raised their glasses in a toast. Ying Baojue and Xie Xida started playing the game of flying cups, which made the atmosphere even more festive.
The banquet went on drinking until sunset. Ximen Qing sent most of the people away, leaving only Wu Dajiu, Shen Yifu, Han Yifu, Wen Kuixuan, Earl Ying, and Xie Xida, who rearranged the tables to keep drinking. That day, after the grand opening, the staff tallied up the accounts, which came to over five hundred taels of silver. Ximen Qing was overjoyed, closed the shop for the night, and invited Gan, Han, Fu, Cui Ben, Ben Si, and Chen Jingji over for drinks. After a while of music and singing, he sent the musicians off, leaving just three young performers to sing at the table.
Earl Ying got tipsy and stepped outside to take a leak. He called over Li Ming and asked, "Whose pretty little performer with the bun is that?" Li Ming replied, "You don’t know, do you, Second Dad?" He then told him, "He is Zheng Feng's younger brother, Zheng Chun. A few days ago, you drank at his house and even took a liking to his sister, Ai Yue'er." The Earl said, "Really? No wonder I saw him at the funeral a few days ago." He then went back to the table and said to Ximen Qing, "Bro, you’ve got yourself another little brother-in-law." Ximen Qing laughed and said, "Don’t talk nonsense." He then called for Wang Jing, "Fill up Earl Ying’s glass." The Earl said to Wu Dajiu, "Old Uncle, what do you think we should do? This drinking is really doing a number on me." Ximen Qing said, "I’m punishing you for talking nonsense." The Earl thought for a moment, chuckled, and said, "It’s fine, I can still drink; drinking won’t kill me." He then said, "I’ve never been good at drinking in silence. Get Zheng Chun up here to sing a tune for me, and then I’ll leave." So, the three young performers came up to play and sing. The Earl told Li Ming and Wu Hui to step aside, saying, "I just want Zheng Chun to play the zither and sing a little something to go with the drinks." Xie Xida said, "Zheng Chun, come over and sing one for the Earl." Ximen Qing said, "As I told Huazi: sing a song, and let’s have a drink." He had Dai An bring two large wine glasses and place them in front of Earl Ying. Zheng Chun plucked the zither strings and gently began to sing "Qing Jiang Yin":
A girl of sixteen or seventeen saw a pair of butterflies frolicking. With fragrant shoulders leaning against the pink wall, like spring bamboo shoots, and tears like marbles, she called Mei Xiang to drive them away to fly elsewhere.
After Zheng Chun finished singing, the count took a sip of wine, and Dai An quickly poured him more. Zheng Chun sang again:
As I turned around the carved railing, I saw him, leaning against the wisteria trellis; feigning shyness, she adjusted her phoenix dress, not speaking of last night's conversation, playfully pinching the flower petals.
After the count finished his meal, he quickly pushed the bowl towards Xie Xida, saying, “Enough, I can’t eat anymore, I can’t eat anymore! These two big bowls of rice have filled me up.” Xie Xida replied, “You silly boy, why push it to me if you can’t eat anymore? I’m not your servant!” The count said, “Silly boy, I’m going to be an official tomorrow, you’ll definitely benefit from it.” Ximen Qing said, “You rascal, at most you’ll just be a lowly official tomorrow.” The count laughed, saying, “Silly child, once I become a minor official, I’ll let you have the position of a major official.” Ximen Qing laughed and told Dai An, “Get some melon seeds to throw at this kid!” Xie Xida quietly tossed a melon seed at the count’s head, saying, “You little brat, Mr. Wen is here—what nonsense are you spouting?” The count said, “Mr. Wen is a scholar, he doesn’t care about these trivial matters.” Scholar Wen said, “You two gentlemen and this old gentleman get along really well. At the banquet, a harmonious atmosphere makes everyone happy. Happiness is in the heart, and joy naturally shows, leading one to dance with abandon.”
Aunt Shen said to Ximen Qing, “Brother-in-law, don’t be like this. Invite Uncle Wu to the table, let’s play a game—either roll dice, guess riddles, or play cards, whether it’s poetry, lyrics, or rapid-fire tongue twisters, whoever can’t keep up has to down a cup of wine. This way, it’s fairer and everyone can have a good time.” Ximen Qing said, “Auntie is right.” He first poured a cup of wine for Uncle Wu, letting him go first. Uncle Wu picked up the dice cup and said, “Everyone, I propose a game: count in order, when you hit a number, say a flower name, and then add a word after the flower name, no matter if it’s poetry or lyrics, say a sentence. If you can't keep up, you have to down a cup of wine. I'll take the first turn—
"A throw of a little red die, the red plum blossom speaks to the white plum blossom."
Uncle Wu threw a two, take another drink. After finishing the drink, it was Uncle Shen's turn. Uncle Shen said:
"A double throw of lotus blossoms, the rippling water plays with colorful mandarin ducks."
Uncle Shen also threw a two, drank two cups, and passed the dice cup to Uncle Han. Uncle Han said:
"A triple throw of spring plums, don’t fix your hat under the plum tree."
After Uncle Han threw, he drank, and passed the dice cup to Scholar Wen. Scholar Wen said: "I am tasked—
A quadruple throw of top scholar red, where red and purple aren’t considered disrespectful attire."
Scholar Wen only drank one cup of wine, and it was the Count's turn. The Count said: "I can't read a single word, I won’t take it seriously, I'll just say a tongue twister instead:
A hasty-footed old child, in the left hand holding a yellow soybean bucket, in the right hand holding a cotton flower fork, just keeps running ahead. A yellow and white flower dog bites at that cotton flower fork, and that hasty-footed old child puts down the yellow soybean bucket in his left hand, walks forward to hit that yellow and white flower dog. Not knowing who was fighting whom, the dog and the hand were at it."
Ximen Qing laughed and scolded: "You idiot, who uses their hand to tease a dog? It’s strange if the dog doesn’t bite!" The Count said: "Who told him not to bring a stick! I don’t have a cane now— I can only take the dog's wrath." Xie Xida said: "Master, look, this guy even called himself a fool." Ximen Qing said: "He should be punished with a drink; that doesn't count. Xie Xida, you go!" Xie Xida said: "I’ll say one too, even better than his:
A broken tile on the wall and a mule below it. The broken tile falls, hitting the mule. Not knowing if the broken tile hurt the mule or if the mule smashed the tile."
The Earl said, "You make fun of me, but your old shrew of a wife is as useful as a mule, and I’m as useless as a broken tile. We're a perfect pair, like a broken millstone and a lame donkey." Xie Xida said, "Your old hag of a wife, a handful of black beans wouldn’t even feed a dog; no one wants her." The two of them started arguing, each had a drink, and then it was Han Daoguo's turn. Han Daoguo said, "Respected elders, how could I possibly go first?" Ximen Qing said, "Go in order, don't refuse." So Han Daoguo said: "Five throws of plum blossoms, encountering immortals among the flowers." After he threw, it was Ximen Qing's turn. Ximen Qing said, "I want to throw a six: Six throws of stars in the sky, cold stars falling into the blue pool." Indeed, he threw a six. The Earl saw it and said, "Brother, this winter you will definitely be promoted and become wealthy; good fortune will come knocking." So he poured a large glass of wine for Ximen Qing. At this time, Li Ming and the others came up to play music and sing, and it was very late before they dispersed. Ximen Qing sent Xiao You'er out to tidy up and set up a watch schedule for Han Daoguo, Gan Huoji, Cui Ben, and Lai Bao, telling them to keep a close eye on the doors, and then he left. The night passed without incident.
The next day, the count came with Li Zhi and Huang Si to repay the money, saying, "This time we only collected one thousand four hundred fifty-six taels of silver, which is still not enough to settle the debt. I've only managed to repay three hundred fifty taels to the old man for now. I’ll gather the rest next time; I can't afford to delay." The count added a few more kind words on his behalf. Ximen Qing called Chen Jingji to count the silver carefully and sent them away. The silver was still on the table when Ximen Qing asked the count, "Chang Er Ge said he found a house, four rooms in total, for only thirty-five taels of silver. When he came to tell me, my child was sick, and I was a bit flustered, so I sent him away. I don't know if he mentioned it to you?" The count replied, "He told me, and I said, your approach is wrong. This guy is unreliable; he's all over the place and isn't in the right frame of mind to talk to you. Don't look for the landlord anymore; when I see him, I will ask for you." Ximen Qing said, "That's fine. After you finish your meal, take fifty taels of silver. Today is a good day; help him buy the house. The rest, let Chang Er Ge open a small shop to earn some money each month to support their living." The count said, "You are taking care of him, brother." After a while, the food was served on the table, and Ximen Qing stayed with him until they finished the meal, saying, "I won't keep you any longer. Take the silver and handle this matter." The count asked, "Do you want me to bring a servant with me?" Ximen Qing replied, "Stop talking nonsense, just go." The count said, "That's not what I meant. I still have some matters today. To be honest, it's my cousin Du Sang Ge's birthday today. I went to deliver a gift in the morning, and he sent a servant to invite me to visit in the afternoon. I just wanted to let you know that I’ll take a servant with me to buy the house so he can relay your message back." Ximen Qing said, "In that case, let Wang Jing go with you." So he called Wang Jing to go with the count to the Chang family.
Chang Zhijie was at home when the Count happened to drop by, so he quickly let him in and sat down. The Count took out some silver and showed it to Chang Zhijie, saying, "Sir, as we agreed, let's finalize the house today. But I'm really busy; Du Sange has asked me out for drinks. I can't leave until I've taken care of your business." Chang Zhijie quickly called for his wife to bring some tea, saying, "Brother, with your generosity, how could I refuse!" As they talked, the tea was served. After they finished the tea, Chang Zhijie called the household servants and went to Xinchijie together, gave the money to the house seller, and then signed the deed. The Count asked Wang Jing to go home and let Ximen Qing know. Chang Zhijie accepted the remaining money at the Count's request. He then said goodbye to Chang Zhijie and headed to Du's house for drinks. After Ximen Qing reviewed the deed, he had Wang Jing take it to Chang Er, and that wrapped things up.
It is said:
When you need help, seek out a great man; when helping others, do so in urgent times. Everything in the world is inferior; who knows that kindness and virtue are noble.
Meng Yulou and Pan Jinlian saw off the old mirror seller and suddenly saw a person wearing a big hat and a veil riding a mule galloping over, causing them both to quickly step back. After removing the veil, they saw that it was Han, the shopkeeper. Ping'an hurriedly asked, "Has the delivery arrived?" Han the shopkeeper said, "The goods have entered the city; could you tell me where you’d like them unloaded, sir?" Ping'an replied, "The master isn’t home; he’s gone to Zhou’s mansion for drinks, so unload them at the building across the street. Please come in." After a while, Chen Jingji came out, took Han the shopkeeper to see Lady Yueliang in the backyard, then returned to the hall, cleaned up, and had Wang Jing bring the luggage into the house. Lady Yueliang quickly had food prepared for Han the shopkeeper. Before long, the delivery arrived. Jingji opened the door of the building across the street, and the workers began to unload. Box after box of goods piled up inside. Ten large carts, full of silk, were unloaded until nightfall. Cui Ben showed up to lend a hand. Once they finished unloading, they counted everything, locked the door, sealed it, and paid the workers. Dai'an rushed to the Governor's office to report the news to Ximen Qing.
Upon hearing that the goods had been unloaded at home, Ximen Qing had a few drinks and planned to head home after dark. Han the shopkeeper was waiting there, and he detailed the whole story to Ximen Qing. Ximen Qing asked, "Has Lord Qian's letter been received? Did you slip him a little something extra?" Han the shopkeeper said, "Thanks to Lord Qian's letter, we managed to pay way less tax on the ten carts of goods. I counted two silk boxes as one, and only reported two out of three parts, all declared as tea leaves and sandalwood cabinets for tax purposes. In total, for all ten carts, we only paid thirty-two taels and five qian. Lord Qian received the tax receipt, and no one came to inspect, so he let us pass." Ximen Qing was really pleased to hear this and said, "I’ll make sure to thank him properly tomorrow." He then asked Chen Jingji to join Han and Cui Ben for drinks, had them stay for a meal, and then each went home.
When Wang Liu'er heard that Han Daoguo was coming, she quickly instructed the maids, Chunxiang and Jin'er, to prepare tea and dinner. In the evening, after Han Daoguo returned home, he paid respects to his ancestors, freshened up, and then the couple caught up. Han Daoguo told his wife how well his business was doing. When his wife noticed the heavy pouch of silver, she asked him about it. He also brought back a couple hundred taels worth of goods, along with some wine and rice, which he planned to sell gradually before bringing the money home. His wife beamed and said, "I heard that Wang Jing has found another Gan partner for sales, and we'll be splitting the profits with Cui Ben. That's great! We can open the store by the end of the month." Han Daoguo replied, "There are salespeople arranged here, but the south still lacks someone to handle procurement and build the warehouse. The master will surely send me there." His wife said, "You know what they say, 'the more you can do, the more you have to do!' If you don’t want to go, I’ll just tell the master to let Gan and the bodyguard take care of the outside business, and you can just sell goods at home." Han Daoguo said, "I’ve gotten used to being out there." His wife replied, "But you got lost last time, and you’re just sitting around at home!" After that, she poured some wine, and the couple toasted to their reunion, then they rested. That night was full of joy, and we’ll skip the details... The next day was the first day of the eighth month. Han Daoguo went to the warehouse early in the morning to oversee the warehouse renovations with Cui Ben and Gan.
Ximen Qing saw that the goods had been unloaded and there was nothing else to occupy him at home, so he suddenly remembered to visit Zheng Ai Yue'er’s house. He secretly had Dai An send three taels of silver and a set of gauze clothing to the Zheng family. The matron of the Zheng family, upon hearing that Ximen Qing wanted to meet their daughter, was overjoyed. She quickly accepted the gifts and told Dai An, "Please say a few flattering words on behalf of the master, mentioning that both of his daughters are at home eagerly awaiting him, and ask him to come over soon." Dai An returned to Ximen Qing's study and relayed the message. Ximen Qing agreed to go in the afternoon and instructed Dai An to prepare the sedan chair. He himself wore a hat, dressed in a blue silk robe, with a light layer of makeup and black boots. First, he went to the warehouse to check the renovation, then got into the sedan chair, lowered the curtain, and with Qintong and Dai An in tow, left Wang Jing at home, only taking Chun Hong, who carried the money bag, and directly went to Zheng Ai Yue'er’s house.
The poem says:
Celestial maidens weave fragrant silk,
First, they drag a snow-white nest into their hands.
Not only can the Peach Blossom Spring inquire about the crossing,
But they also come to the Moon Cave to keep Chang'e company.
Zheng Aixiang was dressed up beautifully and smiled as she welcomed Ximen Qing inside when she saw him arrive. Upon reaching the parlor, she greeted him respectfully. After Ximen Qing sat down, he instructed the servant Qintong, "Send the sedan chair back home and come back to pick me up on horseback tonight." Qintong left, leaving only Dai'an and Chunhong to attend to him. After a while, the madam emerged to greet him, saying, "The young ladies have been quite a disturbance at home; Sir, your esteemed presence is a great honor, please feel free to make yourself at home, why send gifts? And the young lady's clothes, we are really grateful!" Ximen Qing replied, "I called for her that day; why didn't she show up? — She only acknowledges the Wang family!" The madam said, "We're still upset with Dong Jiaor and Li Guier; we didn't know it was the master's birthday and that we were supposed to have them sing. They all had gifts, but our girls did not. If we had known this, we definitely wouldn't have agreed to the Wang family and would have gone to the master’s house first. Later, the master sent someone again, and we were afraid of the Wang family, so we quickly had the girls sneak into the sedan chair through the back door." Ximen Qing said, "A few days ago, I picked her out at the banquet at Old Master Xia's house. If she hadn’t gone that day, I would’ve been really mad. Why didn’t she say a word that day and look unhappy? What’s going on?" The madam replied, "Ever since she started dressing up beautifully, she's been too shy to go out and sing! When she got to the master's house and saw so many people, she was frightened. She has been introverted and spoiled since childhood. You see, she just got up! I've urged her a few times, saying the master is coming today, so she should get up early and dress up. But she wouldn’t listen and ended up sleeping in late."
After a while, a maid brought in tea, and Zheng Aixiang handed it to Ximen Qing. The matron said, "Please have the master sit in the back." Zheng Aixiang led Ximen Qing to the outer room of Zheng Aiyue's quarters and had him sit down. Ximen Qing saw the three characters "爱月轩" displayed above. After a short while, he heard the rustling of the curtain, and Zheng Aiyue came out. She wasn't in a hair bun but had Hangzhou silk wrapped around her head, her shiny black hair piled up like dark clouds. She was dressed in a white jacket and a purple skirt, wearing red embroidered shoes, and adorned in exquisite jade jewelry, making her look even more beautiful and charming.
The poem reads:
If it weren't for the Daoist Guanyin painting,
It would surely be a portrait of a beautiful woman granting longevity.
Ai Yuer approached Ximen Qing, bowed to him, covered her face with a fan and sat down beside him. Ximen Qing stared at her and felt that she was even more beautiful than the first time they met. His heart raced uncontrollably. After a while, a servant brought tea. Ai Yuer gently waved her sleeve, revealing her delicate wrist, picked up a cup of tea, and offered it to Ximen Qing with both hands. Then she and Aixiang each drank a cup. After drinking the tea, she took the teacup and invited Ximen Qing to join her in the inner room. Ximen Qing asked Da'an to take off the green gauze robe draped over him and put it on the chair, then entered the inner room. The room was bright and clean, elegantly decorated, and fragrant, just like a place where gods would reside, inaccessible to ordinary people. The two were chatting and joking when the maid came in to set the table and arranged many exquisite dishes. The first to be served was lotus seed cakes. Zheng Ai Yuer personally prepared the shredded meat and put it in a small plate, handing it to Ximen Qing to eat. After a while, the dishes were cleared away, and a red carpet was rolled out, followed by thirty-two playing cards being brought out for Ximen Qing to play cards with them. After playing cards, more food and wine were brought out. Various fruits were piled up like small mountains, and the wine glasses sparkled, inviting a sense of relaxation. The two sisters poured wine while playing the pipa and zither, and sang a song "Duo's Heart is Coming Up." The song was so beautiful it felt like it could lift one's soul. After singing, they began playing dice with Ximen Qing.
After drinking for a while, Zheng Aixiang went to change her outfit, leaving only Aiyue'er to accompany Ximen Qing in drinking. Ximen Qing pulled a small box wrapped in white cloth from his sleeve. Aiyue'er thought it was tea leaves and reached for it to take a look, but Ximen Qing said, "It's not tea leaves; it's a tonic I usually take. My tea leaves are wrapped in paper." Then he took out a package of osmanthus cakes wrapped in tea leaves for her. Aiyue'er didn't believe him and reached into his sleeve, pulling out a purple sachet containing delicate toothpicks. She looked at it and found it very beautiful, saying, "I saw Sister Gui and Sister Wu both carrying such sachets; so it was you who gave them to her." Ximen Qing replied, "I bought it on a boat in Yangzhou; I didn’t give it to them. Who else would?" After saying this, Ximen Qing drank the medicine and hugged Aiyue'er while drinking, the two of them were close and at ease. Ximen Qing touched Aiyue'er's chest, feeling it very soft and smooth. He lifted Aiyue'er's clothes and saw her fair skin, unable to shake off his lecherous thoughts... Ximen Qing smiled and said, "My good girl! Come down and accompany me." Aiyue'er replied, "Don’t rush; we’ll have plenty of chances later. It's our first meeting today, and I'm not very familiar yet. I'll come to accompany you next time." Ximen Qing wanted to get intimate with her, but Aiyue'er said, "Aren't you going to drink anymore?" Ximen Qing replied, "No more drinking; let's go to bed." Aiyue'er called the maid to move the wine table aside, helped Ximen Qing out of his shoes, and then went to change clothes and take a bath. While Ximen Qing was taking off his shoes, he rewarded the maid with a piece of silver, asking her to head to bed first. He lit incense and placed it in the incense burner. After a while, Aiyue'er came in and asked Ximen Qing, "Do you want to drink tea?" Ximen Qing said, "No, thanks." He closed the door, made the bed, took off his clothes, and got into bed. They embraced each other. Ximen Qing saw Aiyue'er's delicate and smooth skin, pure and flawless, soft and lovely like a fluffy white bun. He held her waist... Aiyue'er frowned, her hands braced on the pillow, looking in great distress.
She squinted and said softly, "Please let me off the hook today!" Upon hearing this, Ximen Qing felt even more exhilarated and enthusiastic... It was just like this:
As spring awakens the red peach blossoms, the green willows dance in the breeze.
Ximen Qing and Zheng Aiyue stayed entwined until the early hours before returning home. The next day, Wu Yueniang asked him to go to the yamen, where Yulou, Jinlian, and Li Jiaoer were all sitting in the upper room. Dai'an came in to get a box to give to Xia Tingxing's birthday gift. Yueniang asked Dai'an, "Who did your father go to drink with in the sedan chair yesterday, only returning so late? He must have gone to Han Daoguo's house to find his wife again. This old scoundrel is always keeping secrets from me and doing things behind my back!" Dai'an said, "No, he came home. How could my father have the heart to go?" Yueniang said, "That's not it. Whose house was it then?" Dai'an just smiled and didn’t say anything. He took the box and went to give the gift. Pan Jinlian said, "Big sister, ask this old scoundrel, how can he tell the truth? I heard that the boy also went with him, let the boy come and ask." She called Chunhong. Jinlian asked, "Who did you go to drink with in the sedan chair with your father yesterday? Tell the truth, or your mother will beat you." Chunhong knelt down and said, "Mother, don't beat me, I'll tell you the truth. I followed my father's sedan chair with Dai'an and Qintong, entered a big gate, turned a few corners, and arrived at a house with a half-door with jagged edges. There was a 'lady' standing inside the door, all dressed up." Jinlian laughed and said, "Old scoundrel, you don't even recognize a half-door? Calling a prostitute a lady." She asked again, "What does that lady look like? Do you know her?" Chunhong said, "I don't know her; she looks like the headgear worn by the lady. After entering the house, an old woman with white hair came out and bowed to my father. Later, a young 'lady' came out, without headgear, with an oval face and red lips, keeping my father company while he drank." Jinlian asked, "Where did you all sit?" Chunhong said, "Dai'an, Qintong, and I were in the old woman's room, accompanying them to drink and eat meat." Yueniang and Yulou couldn't stop laughing. They asked, "Do you know her?" Chunhong said, "I think she used to perform at our place." Yulou said, "It's Li Guijie." Yueniang said, "So it was her house." Li Jiaoer said, "We don’t have a half-door at my place." Jinlian said, "Maybe your place just got a new half-door." After questioning for a while, Ximen Qing returned home and went to Xia Tingxing's birthday.
Pan Jinlian kept a white cat in the house, all white except for a black spot on its forehead, called "Snow Bringing Charcoal" or "Snow Lion." This cat was very clever; it could carry things and even carry ten or so handkerchiefs. When Ximen Qing was not at home, Pan Jinlian would often sleep with it at night, and it would not urinate or defecate on the clothes. It would come when called and leave when told to. Pan Jinlian even called it "Snow Thief." It did not eat dried fish or beef liver; it loved raw meat and was well-fed and strong, with a chicken egg hidden in its fur. Pan Jinlian treasured it, wrapping meat in red cloth for it to play with every day.
One day, the young master was unwell; he had been taking Liu Pozi's medicine for several days and was only just starting to feel a bit better. Li Ping'er dressed the young master in red satin clothes and let him play on the outer bed, while Yingchun watched and the wet nurse sat nearby eating. Unexpectedly, the Snow Lion was perched on the edge of the bed, and when it saw the young master moving around in red clothes, it thought it was the meat it usually got and jumped up, scratching the young master. The young master cried out, gasped, and fell silent, his limbs twitching. The wet nurse was terrified and dropped her bowl, scooping up the young master and patting and comforting him to calm down. The cat still wanted to pounce and scratch him, but Yingchun drove it away. Ruyi (the wet nurse) thought the boy would be alright after a bit, but the twitching continued, so she quickly sent Yingchun to call Li Ping'er, "The boy's not doing well, he's seizing, quick!" Li Ping'er, upon hearing this, was extremely anxious:
"His liver and lungs felt like six leaves crushed together, his heart raced like three hairs in seven holes."
Li Ping'er ran into the house in two steps, seeing the child convulsing, eyes rolled back, with no pupils visible, foaming at the mouth, making cries like a chick, and moving her hands and feet in disorder. She felt heartbroken, quickly picked up the child, pressed her face to the child's mouth, and cried, "My brother, I went out for a while, how did you start convulsing?" Yingchun and the nanny told the story of scaring the child with the cat from Pan Jinlian's house. Li Ping'er cried even harder, "My brother, you must not anger the in-laws; there's no escaping this today!" Yu Niang remained silent for a moment before calling Pan Jinlian and asking her, "Did the cat in your room scare the child?" Jinlian asked, "Who said that?" Yu Niang pointed to Yingchun and the nanny, "They said it." Jinlian said, "Look at this old hag, always running her mouth! My cat was just fine in the room! How did you scare the kid and pin it on me? Cat claws only scratch soft things; is our room that easy to pick on?" Yu Niang said, "How did it come into this room?" Yingchun said, "It often runs back and forth over here." Jinlian said, "Why hasn't it scratched him before? Why now? You’re joining the fuss too; can’t you just talk sense? Our family is just so unlucky!" After saying this in anger, she stormed back into the room.
Dear viewers, Pan Jinlian noticed that Li Ping'er had a son, and Ximen Qing was doting on her, so she went to great lengths to win Ximen Qing back, which is why she raised this cat, hoping to frighten the boy into a fit, make Li Ping'er fall out of favor, and make Ximen Qing favor her again. Just like back in the day when Tu Anjia raised a vicious dog to harm Zhao Dun. As the poem goes:
Thorns are hidden under the flower branches,
How can anyone guard against a treacherous heart?
Everyone noticed the child was having convulsions. While giving him ginger soup to drink, they hurried to call Liu Pozi. Soon, Liu Pozi arrived, checked the pulse, and stomped her feet, exclaiming, "This is serious; it's going to be hard to treat. Quickly brew some mint soup with lotus seeds and silver." She took out gold foil pills, crushed them, but Guanger had his teeth clenched tight. Yu Niang pulled out a gold hairpin to pry open his mouth and poured it in. Liu Pozi said, "If he gets better, that's great. If not, you'll have to inform his grandmother and administer some moxibustion." Yu Niang said, "Who would dare to delay? We'll have to wait for his father to come back and ask. If we do moxibustion now, he'll just be upset when he comes back." Li Bing'er said, "Madam, please save him now! It will be too late when his father comes back. If he gets angry, I'll take the blame." Yu Niang said, "He's your child; you can treat him however you want. I dare not make decisions." So, Liu Pozi performed moxibustion on five points: Guanger's eyebrows, neck, wrists, and chest, then laid him down to sleep. The child was in a deep sleep and didn't wake up until Ximen Qing returned. When Liu Pozi saw Ximen Qing come back, Yu Niang handed her five silver coins, and she quietly slipped away.
Ximen Qing returned to the main room, and Yue Niang told him about the child who was having convulsions. Ximen Qing hurried to check and saw Li Ping'er crying with red eyes, asking, "Why did the child have convulsions?" Li Ping'er cried and said nothing. He asked the maid and the wet nurse, but they were too afraid to say anything. Ximen Qing noticed that the official's son had scratched his hand until it bled, and there were burn marks on his body. Worried, he went to ask Yue Niang again. Unable to hide it any longer, Yue Niang had no choice but to tell him about how the cat from Pan Jinlian's house had scared the child. "Old Liu just checked and said it was a case of acute fright; we had to perform moxibustion, and it would have been too late by the time you got back. The two of them took matters into their own hands and performed moxibustion on the child in five places before they let him sleep. He still hasn’t come to." Upon hearing this, Ximen Qing exploded with rage, storming over to Pan Jinlian's room. Without a word, he grabbed the cat known as the snow lion and went to the corridor, violently throwing it onto the stone platform. With a sickening crunch, the cat's head splattered, and blood was everywhere. The poem says:
Not catching mice in the mortal realm,
But returning to the underworld to become a spirit raccoon.
Seeing Ximen Qing kill the cat, Pan Jinlian sat on the kang, not even batting an eye. After Ximen Qing left, Pan Jinlian began to mutter softly, "That heartless thief! Only by killing people can he be considered a hero! Did a cat really get in your way? Running over like a madman to kill it! He’s gone to the underworld and will come looking for you tomorrow; what are you panicking about? That damned thief will get what's coming to him!"
Ximen Qing went to Li Bing'er's room and scolded the nursemaid and Yingchun, saying, "I told you to take good care of the child. How did you let the cat scare him and scratch his hand! You even believed that old witch Liu Pozi's words and performed moxibustion on the child without justification! If the child is really fine, that's good. But if something happens, I will drag that old witch to the yamen and give her a good lesson!" Li Bing'er said, "The child's fate was never good to begin with. Filial piety is the most important. She also wishes for the child to recover." Li Bing'er hoped for the child's recovery, but unexpectedly the moxibustion hurt the child internally, causing infantile spasms. The child's intestines convulsed, experienced incontinence, had stools of various colors, eyes opened and closed alternately, was lethargic all day, and refused to eat. Li Bing'er was desperate, desperately seeking divine intervention and fortune-tellers everywhere, but the omens were mostly unfavorable. Yue Niang secretly invited Liu Pozi to perform rituals and also invited a pediatric doctor to see the child. When the powder was blown, the child showed no reaction, not even a sneeze. Li Bing'er wept day and night, unable to eat a thing.
As the Mid-Autumn Festival approached, because her child was gravely ill, Li Ping'er didn't even celebrate her own birthday, and she didn't even invite relatives and friends who came to offer gifts. Only Mrs. Wu, Miss Yang, and the master accompanied her. Xue and Wang quarreled over money at the scripture printing house, exposing each other's faults. On the fourteenth day, Ben and Xue demanded money, taking away all the printed scriptures, which totaled fifteen hundred scrolls. Li Ping'er also gave them some coins to buy joss paper and incense. On the fifteenth day, Li Ping'er and Chen Jingji went to the temple early in the morning, donating all the printed scriptures and returned to tell Li Ping'er. The wealthy Qiao family sent Sister Kong to check on the child every day and recommended Doctor Bao to see the child, saying, "This child is beyond help and can't be cured." They paid Doctor Bao five silver coins and sent him on his way. The child wouldn't take the medicine and just threw it up. The child just lay there with eyes closed, making a gurgling sound. Li Ping'er barely rested, holding the child day and night, crying until her eyes were swollen. Ximen Qing didn’t visit often either, just stopping by to check on the child after work each day.
It was late August, with a cool breeze in the air. Li Ping'er held the child in bed, a silver lamp burning on the table, and the maidservants were all asleep. Li Ping'er looked at the bright moonlight outside the window, listening to the ticking of the clock, her heart heavy with worries and countless thoughts. She recited:
The Milky Way glimmers, the jade clock chimes. The bright moon shines through the window, the cool breeze blows through the room. The woodcutter's lodge drum beats, one watch not yet over, one watch struck; the courtyard's cold chisels, a thousand pounds of rice being pounded. The sound of iron horses clinking in front of the painted eaves, shattering the thoughts of the sorrowful woman; the light flickering on the silver platform, casting a shadow on the beautiful woman sighing. With all her heart wishing for her child's recovery, who would have thought that sorrow would lead to so many sleepless nights?
Li Ping'er lay in bed, in a drowsy state, dreaming that Hua Zixu entered from outside, dressed in white, looking just as he did in life. Upon seeing Li Ping'er, he shouted, "You shameless woman, how could you give all my belongings to Ximen Qing? I’m going to sue you for this!" Li Ping'er grabbed his sleeve and begged, "Brother, please spare me!" Hua Zixu froze, jolting awake and realizing it was just a dream. When he awoke, he found he was clutching the sleeve of the official's son. She let out a few burps and exclaimed, "How strange!" The sound of a drum marked exactly three o'clock in the morning. Li Ping'er was so frightened that she broke out in a cold sweat, her hair standing on end.
The next day, Ximen Qing entered the room and recounted the dream he had last night. "I know where he went! This must be a dream from the past. Don't take it too seriously; just try to let it go. I'll have someone go and invite Wu Yiner to accompany you, and I'll also have Lao Feng come to take care of you for a few days." Dai'an quickly brought Wu Yiner over. As the sun was setting, the child was barely breathing in the nursemaid's arms. The nursemaid anxiously shouted to Li Ping'er, "Madam, come quickly to see the young master. His eyes are rolling back; he's only exhaling and not inhaling!" Li Ping'er hurried over to pick up the child, crying and calling the maid, "Quickly go and call your father! The child seems to be struggling to breathe!" At that moment, Chang Zhijie came again, saying that the house had been found: two storefront houses, two floors, a total of four rooms, for only thirty-five taels of silver. Hearing about the child's critical condition, Ximen Qing asked Chang Zhijie to go back first, "I won't see you off today; I'll send the silver to you later." He quickly ran to Li Ping'er's room. The women watched helplessly as the child gasped for breath in his mother's arms. Ximen Qing couldn't bear to watch and sat in the chair in the bright room, sighing. In a short while, the child passed away, having lived only one year and two months. The family members all burst into tears. Li Ping'er clawed at her face, slammed her head on the ground, and fainted from her grief. After a while, she woke up, holding the child and crying, "My darling, my beloved darling! I would rather die with you than live without you! My heart is broken!" The nursemaid Ruyi'er and Yingchun beside her also cried uncontrollably. Ximen Qing instructed the servants to clean up the west wing room, set up two wide benches, and prepare to carry the child out with the bedding. Li Ping'er held onto the child tightly, refusing to let go, crying, "My wronged one! My darling! You've taken my heart and soul! I've put in so much effort and endured so much suffering, and now I'll never see you again..." The women tried to persuade her, but to no avail. Ximen Qing walked over, saw her scratched face and disheveled hair, and said, "Look at yourself! After all, he's not our own child. We raised him for a while, and he died early. It's fine to cry a few times, but why cry like this! Crying won't bring him back, and you need to take care of yourself too. Now let's have him carried out first, and then we'll call a Taoist priest to see what time it is now." Yueliang said, "It's around the hour of the monkey." Yulou said, "I've said it before! He had to leave at this time. His birth and death times are both around the hour of the monkey, on the 23rd, just different months. Exactly one year and two months." When Li Ping'er saw the servants preparing to carry the child away, she cried again, "Why are you rushing to take him away? Auntie, feel him, he's still warm!" She cried out, "My child! How can I bear to let you go! You've caused me so much suffering!" She collapsed to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably. The servants gently carried the child out and laid him in the west wing room.
Madam Yue said to Master Ximen, "We still need to let the in-laws and the child's teacher at the temple know." Master Ximen replied, "Let's speak to the teacher at the temple tomorrow." He sent Dai'an to report to the Qiao household and also had someone invite Master Xu Yin Yang to come and consult about the child's fate. He handed ten taels of silver to Ben Si, instructing him to quickly carry a pair of fir boards and have a carpenter make a small coffin in preparation for the funeral. When the Qiao family received the news, Master Qiao's wife immediately arrived in a sedan chair and broke down in tears as soon as she entered. Madam Yue and the others joined in mourning, recounting the events once again. After a while, Master Xu arrived and after assessing the situation, he stated, "The child passed away during the hour of Shen." Madam Yue instructed to bring out the black book for him to read. After examining the Yin Yang book, Master Xu said, "The child was born on the 23rd day of the sixth month of the Bing Shen year and passed away on the 23rd day of the eighth month of the Ding You year. The month is Ding You, the day is Ren Zi, which indicates a serious loss of heaven and earth. The immediate family should refrain from crying, while other relatives may express their grief. During the funeral, people born in the years of the Snake, Dragon, Rat, and Rabbit should stay away for good luck. The black book also states: Those who die on the day of Ren Zi will ascend to the Bao Ping Palace and descend to the Qi Di. In his previous life, he was a man from the Cai family in Yanzhou, who bullied and robbed others, indulged in alcohol, disrespected heaven, earth, and parents, and faced numerous misfortunes. He suffered from a chronic illness, remaining bedridden for an extended period, and passed away in squalor. In this life as a child, he also suffered from epilepsy. Ten days prior, he was startled by livestock, his soul was damaged, and he offended the Earthly Branch Tai Sui, resulting in his soul being taken by the deceased and reincarnated as a man in the Wang family in Zhengzhou, where he later became a military officer and lived until the age of sixty-eight." After reading the black book, Master Xu asked Master Ximen when the funeral or cremation would take place. Master Ximen replied, "How can we possibly hold it tomorrow? Let's wait three days, complete the prayers, and then have the funeral in two days, laying him to rest." Master Xu said, "On the 27th day of the Bing Chen year, it is auspicious for the whole family to bury him at noon." After determining the fate, the funeral preparations began, despite it being well past midnight. Lady Li cried as she returned to her room, taking out the child's few clothes, hat, shoes, and socks, placing them in the coffin, sealing it with longevity nails. The family cried again before finally seeing off Master Xu Yin Yang.
The next day, Ximen Qing was in disarray and didn't show up at the yamen. Xia Tingxiang heard about it and came to pay his respects after the yamen had adjourned. He also sent someone to notify Wudao Temple, stating that three days later, he would invite monks from Baoren Temple to his home to chant scriptures. Wudao Temple and Qiao Dahufu's family both sent offerings of food and incense. Wudaju, Shen Yifu, Han Yifu, and Huadaju all sent offerings and burned joss paper. Ying Baojue, Xie Xida, Wen Xiucai, Chang Zhijie, Han Daoguo, Gan Chushen, Ben Dichuan, Li Zhi, and Huang Si all contributed money and came to keep Ximen Qing company that evening. After the monks had departed, they invited opera singers to come, first to perform rituals in front of the child's spirit, and then Ximen Qing hosted a banquet in the main hall. That day, Li Guijie, Wu Yiner, and Zheng Yuer's families all came to pay their respects with gifts.
Li Ping'er missed Guan Ge so much that she was feeling down all day, unable to eat and just cried, her voice hoarse from weeping. Ximen Qing was afraid she would miss the child, so he thought of a way: during the day, he had the wet nurse, maid, and Wu Yin'er accompany her, never leaving her side. At night, Ximen Qing slept in her room for three consecutive days, trying different ways to comfort her. Xue Guzi even read her the "Sutra of the Perfect Enlightenment" and the "Curse of Resolving Grievances" at night, telling her, "Don't cry anymore; he's not your child, but a creditor from your past life. Isn't it said in the 'Sutra of the Perfect Enlightenment': once there was a woman who had three children, all of whom died before the age of two. She cried so much she felt like she might die, holding her child by the river, unwilling to let go. This moved Guanyin, who transformed into a monk and said, 'Don't cry; these are not your children, but your enemies from a past life. They have reincarnated three times, all wanting to kill you. If you don't believe me, I'll let you see.' Saying this, he pointed, and the child turned into a yaksha, standing in the water, saying, 'You killed me in your past life, and I've come to take revenge. Now, because you often recite the "Sutra of the Perfect Enlightenment," the benevolent spirits protect you day and night, so I can't harm you. I have been saved by Guanyin, and from now on, I will no longer oppose you.' After saying this, he sank into the water and disappeared. Let me tell you, your son must be a past-life enemy, reborn in your family to take your money and torment you. Because you've recited the "Sutra of the Perfect Enlightenment" fifteen hundred times, you have this merit, so he couldn't harm you and left you. The one born tomorrow will truly be your child." After hearing this, even though Li Ping'er still couldn't let go, she couldn't help but cry when she thought of this matter.
Five days later, on the morning of the twenty-seventh, eight young attendants dressed in green clothes and white hats were hired, using a large red coffin adorned with gold decorations, accompanied by banners, ceremonial cloths, jade plums, and snow willows. In front was a large red banner that read "The Tomb of Xi Men, the Male Key Figure." At the Wu Daoist Temple, twelve young Taoist boys dressed in green were also dispatched to chant the "Sheng Shen Yu Zhang" around the coffin while playing music for the funeral. Relatives and friends dressed in mourning attire accompanied Xi Menqing and walked to the east end of the street, just as they reached the entrance. Xi Menqing, fearing that Li Ping'er would be heartbroken at the grave, didn't allow her to attend. Only Wu Yueniang, Li Jiao'er, Meng Yulou, Pan Jinlian, and the eldest sister of the family, with five sedan chairs, accompanied the mother of the Qiao family, the great-aunt, and Li Guier, Zheng Yue'er, and Wu Shunchen's wife, Zheng Sanjie, to the grave, leaving Sun Xue'e, Wu Yiner, and two aunts at home to accompany Li Ping'er. When Li Ping'er realized she wasn't allowed to go and saw the coffin being carried out the door, she ran after it, crying out, "Oh, my poor child!" She cried until her voice was hoarse, and in a fit of grief, she bumped her head against the door frame, causing her forehead to bleed and her gold hairpin to drop. Wu Yiner and Sun Xue'e hurriedly helped her up and urged her to return. Returning to the room, she saw the bed empty, with only the birthday star drum that her son used to play still hung at the head of the bed. She wanted to pick it up, but suddenly struck the table in frustration and cried non-stop. Wu Yiner, holding her hand, advised, "Mother, try not to cry so much. Brother is already gone; crying won't bring him back! You need to find a way to cope and not dwell on sadness all the time." Xue'e said, "You are still young; if you continue to worry like this, it will take a toll on your health! There are cracks and ears in the walls; we can't speak openly about it. He had ill intentions and ended up harming himself. He caused your child's death; let him taste the consequences and pay with his life. We have all suffered because of him many times! As long as the man keeps an eye on him, it's fine; sleeping in his room for a night will make him furious. You all know that the man rarely comes to my place; he has only been here once. Look, he constantly murmurs behind my back, gossiping about me in front of his sister. We just ignore him, watching him with one eye open and one eye closed every day."
"This whore, who knows how she'll meet her end tomorrow!" Li Ping'er said, "Forget it, I'm just as sick, not knowing when I might die, I can’t argue with her anymore, let her be!"
While speaking, Nanny Ruyi knelt down and cried, "There's something I don't dare to tell you, Mistress - today the young master died, it's all because I have no luck. I'm afraid that in the future, father and mother-in-law will send me away. Now that I have lost my husband, where can I go?" Seeing her say this, Li Ping'er felt even more upset and said, "Silly child, even if the child is gone, I am still alive! Even if I die tomorrow, after you have worked for me, I won't let you go. In the future, when your mother-in-law has another child, I will let you take care of it, just like before. There's no need to worry." Ruyi stopped speaking. After a long time, Li Ping'er cried again in sorrow, and Xue'e and Wu Yiner persuaded her, "You haven't eaten anything yet, don't just cry!" They had Xiu Chun bring food and put it on the table to accompany her. Li Ping'er couldn't bring herself to eat at all! She only ate a small bowl and then put it down.
Master Ximen selected a burial plot at the grave and buried the young master beside Madam Chen, burying the grandson together. That day, Qiao Dahut and relatives were all there to pay their respects, and they drank all day in the newly built shed. After returning home, Li Ping'er, Lady Yuen, Qiao Dahut's wife, and the matchmaker all kowtowed and cried. Li Ping'er said to Qiao Dahut's wife, "Dear mother-in-law, who is like me, raising a child only to have him die so young? Not only did he die, but he also put your daughter through so much, making her a widow. Please don't make fun of me." Qiao Dahut's wife said, "Why are you saying this, dear mother-in-law? Children have their own destiny; who can guarantee what will happen in the future? As the saying goes, what will be, will be. You are still young; are you worried about not having grandchildren in the future? Take it slow, dear mother-in-law, don't be too sad." After saying this, she left.
Ximen Qing had Mr. Xu clean the front hall and put up yellow talismans to ward off evil spirits. The deceased's malevolent energy was three zhang high, moving towards the northeast. If it encounters the wandering spirits and comes back, it should be killed to bring good fortune and spare the family from taboo. Ximen Qing thanked Mr. Xu with a piece of cloth and two taels of silver. That night, Ximen Qing went to Li Ping'er's room to spend the night with her. The two of them shared tender moments for a long time. Seeing their son's toys still there, Ximen Qing was worried that Li Ping'er might feel sad, so he asked Yingchun to put them away. It is said: "The thoughts of the beloved child cry day and night; my heart feels like it's being cut, hanging by a thread. All the sorrows in the world, except for death, are the pain of separation."
The words say:
Worries twist and turn, resembling a weave; tears are wiped away in secret, only to drip again. I’m angry with the maid, trying to let my guard down, but all I feel is a deep-seated resentment. All has been settled, how to forget is the only issue! Leaning against the balcony railing again, trying to listen for news.
Ximen Qing drank until completely drunk, swaying back to Sun Xue'e's room. Xue'e was busy in the kitchen and, upon hearing Ximen Qing enter, hurriedly ran over. Yu Dajie was sitting on Ximen Qing's bed, urging him to go to Lady Yu's room to sleep with Yuxiao and Xiaoyu. Xue'e had three rooms: a bedroom, a kang room, and another. Ximen Qing hadn’t visited in over a year, so his sudden arrival today surprised her. She quickly helped him undress and guided him to sit in a chair. Then she quickly made the bed, lit incense, boiled water, poured tea for him, helped him into bed, took off his shoes and clothes, and tucked him in. They spent the night in silence.
The next day was Ximen Qing's birthday, the 28th of the twelfth lunar month. Just after burning joss paper, Han Daoguo's assistant Hu Xiu arrived. Ximen Qing summoned him to the hall and asked about the cargo ship. Hu Xiu presented the account book and said that Han Daoguo had purchased goods worth ten thousand taels of silver in Hangzhou, which had arrived in Linqing but had yet to enter the city due to tax issues. Ximen Qing was overjoyed upon seeing the account book, so he had his servant prepare a meal for Hu Xiu, then asked him to go to Qiao's house. Then, Ximen Qing said to Wu Yueniang, "Han's cargo ship has arrived in Linqing, and the assistant Hu Xiu has brought the account book. We need to quickly tidy up the room across the street, unload the goods, hire some help, and open a shop to sell them." Yueniang said, "You should arrange it quickly; we can't afford any delays." Ximen Qing replied, "I will talk to Ying Er when he arrives." After a short while, Ying Bojue showed up, and Ximen Qing invited him to sit and mentioned that Han's cargo ship had arrived and they were in need of a salesman. Ying Bojue congratulated Ximen Qing, saying that this is a double blessing—good things come in pairs. He recommended a man named Gan Run, who he claimed was experienced in the satin trade, sharp, and capable, and currently residing in Shiqiao Alley. Ximen Qing said, "Sounds good; have him come see me tomorrow."
As they were talking, Li Ming, Wu Hui, and Zheng Feng arrived, paying their respects. After a while, the members of the opera troupe arrived and were shown to the dining room. At this time, the person in charge of the opera reported that Zheng Aiyue wasn't coming. Her mother said she had been summoned by the Wang family to perform, and only Qi Xiang'er, Dong Jiao'er, and Hong Sier came. When Ximen Qing heard that Zheng Aiyue wasn't coming, he got angry and asked Zheng Feng what was going on. Zheng Feng said he didn't live with her and didn't know. Ximen Qing said, "So I have no power over her?" Immediately, he asked Dai An to take people, take his invitation letter, and go to the Wang family to get her, claiming that he was hosting guests and that Zheng Aiyue had agreed to come, so they must let her go. If she refuses, her mother will be taken too. He also asked Zheng Feng to go with them. Worried that Ximen Qing might get angry, Zheng Feng pleaded with Dai An to go in first while he waited outside. Dai An said that if she really went to the Wang family, he would go with the invitation letter to get her; if she was hiding at home, Zheng Feng should quickly go to his mother and ask her to come over, and he would help say a few good words.
Dai An left, and Ximen Qing said to the Count, "This little minx is really infuriating, singing in other people's houses but not coming to mine." The Count said, "She's just a young girl; how could she possibly know about these things? She doesn't even know how powerful you are!" Ximen Qing said, "This little girl is clever; let her come and sing for a few days as a trial. I didn't expect her to be so disobedient." The Count said, "These girls today are all top-notch." Li Ming said, "Second Master, you haven't seen Aiyue yet!" The Count said, "I had drinks at her house with your father; she was still young at that time. I haven't seen her for a few years and don't know how she is now." Li Ming said, "Although she looks good, she's all about appearances; her singing is not as good as Sister Gui." Who would dare to not come to Ximen Qing's place? What if they come? She doesn't grasp the seriousness of the situation! At this time, Hu Xiu reported that he had already been to the Qiao family. Ximen Qing instructed Chen Jingji to take fifty taels of silver, write a letter, send a boy, and go to give the money to the old man Qiao early tomorrow morning so he could help him with tax matters.
Suddenly, someone shouted that Lord Liu and Lord Xue had arrived. Ximen Qing quickly went to greet them and invited them to take a seat. Xue Gonggong asked who Ying Bojue was, and Ximen Qing replied that he was an old friend of his. Xue Gonggong asked if he was the Ying Xian who loved to tell jokes, and Ying Bojue confirmed it was him. After they had tea, Ping An came in to report that Zhou Ye had sent someone with an invitation, saying there was still a banquet today and they did not need to wait for him. Ximen Qing glanced at the invitation, and Xue Gonggong asked who had arrived late. Ximen Qing said Zhou Nanxuan still had a banquet, and he had sent someone to say they did not need to wait for him. Xue Gonggong said that since it was the case, they wouldn’t wait for him.
Just then, Wang Jing brought two invitations, saying, "Two scholars have arrived." Ximen Qing looked and saw one was named Ni Peng and the other Wen Bigu. He realized they were friends recommended by Ni Xiucai and quickly went out to greet them. The two scholars were dressed elegantly. Ximen Qing did not look at Ni Xiucai first; his eyes were fixed on Wen Bigu. Wen Bigu was just under forty, with a straightforward and handsome appearance, a beard on his chin, a dignified demeanor, and a gentle manner. Ximen Qing pondered this person's character and decided to observe him first. He silently evaluated:
This Wen Bigu, while talented, often hangs out in questionable places. His career hasn’t gone far, and his ambitions have long since faded; his family has declined, and that kind of lofty spirit has also dissipated. He’s given up on those writings and Confucian ideals; as for serving the country and the people, and honoring ancestors, he has left them far behind. He’s a real-world rogue, only interested in money; he goes with the wind, not caring at all about his reputation. He dresses flashy, but has a completely indifferent attitude; he talks a big game, but in reality, he’s empty inside. After three years of trying, he can’t even pass the basic exams, yet he still hopes to make the list? He spends all day drinking and socializing, living freely like a true recluse.
Ximen Qing invited them into the living room, exchanged greetings, and each person presented gifts such as handkerchiefs, wishing Ximen Qing a happy birthday. After the greetings, they sat down as host and guests. Ximen Qing said, "I have long heard of Mr. Wen's remarkable talents; may I ask for your full name?" Mr. Wen replied, "My humble title is Rixin, with the style name Kuixuan." Ximen Qing said, "Mr. Kuixuan." He then asked, "Where are you studying? What are you studying?" Mr. Wen replied, "I am not talented; I am studying mathematics at the local academy and just started studying the I Ching. I've long admired your reputation but have been too timid to visit. This time, my classmate Ni Guiyan mentioned your noble character, so I dared to come and visit." Ximen Qing said, "Thank you for visiting first; I will definitely come to thank you in person another time. I'm just a military man, a bit rough around the edges and not well-versed in literature. I don't have anyone to help me with my letters. I met Mr. Ni Guiyan at a colleague's house before, and he praised your talent and character. I had been meaning to visit you for some guidance, but I didn't expect you to come in person, bringing such generous gifts. I am truly grateful." Mr. Wen said, "I only have a few modest talents and virtues; you're too generous." After drinking tea, Ximen Qing took them to the backyard gazebo, where the two elderly eunuchs, Xue and Liu, were also waiting. Prime Minister Xue said, "Please, gentlemen, come in and make yourselves comfortable." Ximen Qing had someone help them out of their outer garments, invited them in, and after several rounds of polite insistences, they finally sat down on opposite sides.
While they were talking, Uncle Wu and Captain Fan arrived, paid their respects, and sat down. After a short while, Dai-An and a few young servants returned and reported, "The four opera singers have all been summoned." Ximen Qing asked, "Did Wang Huang-Qin summon them?" Dai-An replied, "They were called by Wang Huang-Qin's mansion. They haven't left yet. I scared them with a lock to hurry them along, and they all came together." Ximen Qing walked up to the steps in the hall. At that moment, the four opera singers filed in and bowed deeply to Ximen Qing. Zheng Ai-Yue wore a purple gauze blouse and a white embroidered skirt; her slender waist was as light and graceful as a willow, and her beauty was striking, like a hibiscus in full bloom. Truly:
Countless charms exist, yet none can be bought; a night with a gifted woman is truly priceless.
Ximen Qing said to Zheng Aiyue, "I called for you, why didn't you come? How frustrating! Watch me teach you a lesson!" Zheng Aiyue bowed respectfully, stood up without saying a word, smiled, and followed the others to the backyard. In the backyard, they paid their respects to Lady Yuexiang and the others. Seeing Li Guifei and Wu Yiner there, they greeted them and said, "You're here quite early!" Li Guifei said, "I haven't been home in two days." Then she asked, "What took you so long to arrive?" Dong Jiaoer said, "Lady Yue held us up; we only left after receiving the money." Zheng Aiyue simply smiled behind her fan and remained silent. Lady Yuexiang asked, "Who is this young woman?" Dong Jiaoer said, "Madam, you don't know, she is Zheng Aixiang's sister Zheng Aiyue, just turned eighteen, not even six months ago." Lady Yuexiang said, "She's quite well-built." After that, she drank tea and started serving tea to them. Pan Jinlian lifted her skirt and examined her feet, saying, "Why are your feet so straight, not as pretty as the feet we see outside? Our feet have slender toes, while your heels are a bit too large." Lady Yuexiang said to the old lady, "She's just a bit too competitive; why bother asking her!" Then she picked up the golden hairpin on her head and asked, "Where did you have this hairpin made?" Zheng Aiyue said, "It was made by a silversmith in our place." After a bit, the tea was ready, and Lady Yuexiang said, "Guifei, Yiner, accompany them for tea." Soon after, the six opera singers gathered together for tea. Li Guifei and Wu Yiner said to Dong Jiaoer, "Why not take a stroll in the garden?" Dong Jiaoer said, "Let’s take a quick stroll in the backyard first." Li Guifei and Wu Yiner followed Pan Jinlian and Meng Yulou out of the ceremonial gate towards the garden. Since there were people in the gazebo, they decided to skip it, but spent some time enjoying the flowers and plants here before going to see the little one in Li Ping'er's room. The little one seemed a bit uncomfortable, woke up crying and couldn't drink his milk. Li Ping'er stayed inside and didn't come out. Seeing Li Guifei, Wu Yiner, Meng Yulou, and Pan Jinlian come in, she quickly invited them to sit down. Guifei asked, "Is the child asleep?" Li Ping'er said, "He cried all day before finally falling asleep." Yulou said, "Madam suggested inviting Liu the midwife to check on him; why didn't you send someone to get her?" Li Ping'er said, "Today is his father's birthday; we can invite her tomorrow."
Not provided.
While they were chatting, they suddenly saw four performers coming over with Sister Ximen and Xiaoyu. Sister Ximen said, "So you’ve been here all along, causing us to look for you everywhere in the garden." Xiaoyu replied, "There were people in the garden, so we didn’t want to go in; we just took a quick look from a distance and came over." Li Guijie asked Hong Sier, "What have you four been up to in the backyard? It took you so long to get here." Hong Sier said, "We were drinking tea in Si Niang's room." Pan Jinlian, upon hearing this, smiled at Xiaoyu and Li Ping'er and asked Hong Sier, "Who told you to go to Si Niang's?" Dong Jiaor said, "She told us to drink tea in her room and asked us, 'Haven't you paid your respects to the elder yet? Do you not know who this lady is?' She then said, 'I am your Si Niang.'" Jinlian said, "What a shameless little brat! It would be one thing if someone else called you that, but who dares to call themselves Si Niang in their own house? In this household, who respects you, who cares about you, who calls you Si Niang? Your man spent a night in the house and took advantage of the situation, and now he’s causing trouble. If it weren’t for the fact that there’s your sister-in-law in the elder lady’s room, Guijie in the second lady's room, Miss Yang in your room, Sister Li in her room with Sister Yin, and my grandmother Pan in my room, how could you even think you could go to your own room?" Xiaoyu said, "You haven’t seen it yet—this morning, she sent her father to the front yard, shouting and calling in the courtyard, acting all high and mighty." Jinlian said, "As the saying goes: a servant shouldn’t be arrogant, and a child shouldn’t be spoiled." She then asked Xiaoyu, "I heard your father told your grandmother that he would find her a maid. It’s said that your father saw her busy in his room yesterday and asked her about it. That little minx took the opportunity to tell your father, 'I’m too busy to clean the house during the day, so I can only sleep in this room at night.' Your father said, 'No problem, just tell your mother tomorrow to find you a maid to use.'—Is this true?" Xiaoyu replied, "I don’t know; maybe Yuxiao heard about it?" Jinlian said to Guijie, "Doesn’t your father have people from all our households? He doesn’t go to his room for no reason. Did we say something bad about him behind his back? He’s already clumsy with words and tends to offend people, so we don’t talk to him." Just then, Xiuchun brought in tea. While they were drinking, they suddenly heard the sound of drums and gongs in front; Jing Dujian and the others had arrived, bringing wine to the feast, and Dai An called the four performers to the front.
That day, Qiao Dahu did not come. First, there were acrobatics and various performances, with music and singing. After the dance troupe finished their performance, a comedic play was staged. The food was served, starting with a bowl of rice soup. Just then, Doctor Ren arrived, wearing a hat. Ximen Qing went to the hall to greet him, and they exchanged formalities. Doctor Ren instructed the servants to take out a longevity handkerchief and two pieces of silver from a felt bag to celebrate Ximen Qing's birthday. He said, "Yesterday, Han Mingchuan mentioned it, so I just learned that today is your birthday, esteemed elder. I apologize for being late!" Ximen Qing replied, "How dare I trouble you, and thank you for your generous gift. I also appreciate the wonderful medicine you provided a few days ago." After completing their greetings, Doctor Ren wanted to toast, but Ximen Qing declined, saying, "No need." He then took off his coat, greeted everyone, and sat in the fourth position on the left side, next to Wu Dajiu. The rice soup and snacks were served, and after Doctor Ren expressed his thanks, he had the servants take them away. Four performers played musical instruments and sang a birthday blessing. Ximen Qing instructed the guests at the head table to take turns toasting. The musicians presented the program list, and the two court ministers, Liu and Xue, chose the play "Han Xiangzi Crossing Chen Banjie Ascending to Immortality." Just as they began a performance, they heard voices calling out that grew closer. Ping An came in to report, "Lord Zhou from the Guard Bureau has arrived." Ximen Qing hurried to greet him. Before they met, he invited him to make himself comfortable and take a seat. Lord Zhou said, "I came to have a drink with Si Quan." Minister Xue said, "Lord Zhou doesn't need to toast; a simple exchange of greetings will suffice." After they exchanged formalities, they bowed to everyone and took a seat in the third position on the left side. Then, rice soup, snacks, two plates of dim sum, two plates of cooked meat, and two bottles of wine were served. After Lord Zhou expressed his thanks, he had the servants take them away and then sat down. As they drank and enjoyed the lively singing and dancing, the atmosphere was truly festive. Indeed, it was:
The dance sways beneath the willow moon atop the tower, while the song concludes with the breeze under the peach blossom fan.
After drinking until evening, Ren Yiguan left first. Ximen Qing saw him off, and Ren Yiguan asked, "Is my mother feeling any better?" Ximen Qing replied, "My wife has taken her medicine and feels much better. However, she has been a bit uncomfortable again these past two days. Please invite the old gentleman to come by tomorrow for a check-up." After saying this, Ren Yiguan took his leave and rode away. Later, Ni Xiucai and Wen Xiucai also got up to bid farewell. Despite Ximen Qing's repeated attempts to keep them, he eventually escorted them out the main gate, saying, "Please visit again another day for guidance. My humble home is just across the street from the Shiyi Academy, very close to where the old gentleman stays. Even the family has moved here, which makes things very convenient. The students will present a monthly stipend to cover your living expenses." Wen Xiucai said, "I am deeply grateful for your kindness." Ni Xiucai said, "This reflects the old gentleman's love for refinement." After sending off the two scholars, Ximen Qing kept drinking with his guests late into the night. The four performers went to Yueniang's room to sing for her, her sister-in-law, and Yang. Ximen Qing stayed behind with Wu Dajiu and Ying Bojue to continue drinking. After the musicians finished their meal and left, Ximen Qing had the table cleared and instructed someone to bring out a fruit platter from the back, inviting Li Ming, Wu Hui, and Zheng Feng to come up and perform, offering them large cups of wine to drink. Ying Bojue said, "Brother, today is your birthday banquet, and everyone is very happy." Li Ming said, "Today, Lord Xue and Lord Liu treated us to quite a few things, and later when we saw Sister Gui and Sister Yin come out, we each gave them a little something. It’s just that Lord Xue is younger than Lord Liu and loves to have fun more." After a while, a young boy came in carrying the fruit platter. When Ying Bojue saw the buttered snails, he picked one up and put it in his mouth, that melted in my mouth like sweet dew. He exclaimed, "So delicious!" Ximen Qing said, "My son, you really know how to enjoy! This was personally picked by your sixth mother." Bojue laughed and said, "It’s also a gesture of my daughter’s filial piety." He then said, "Old uncle, you should try one too." He picked one up and offered it to Wu Dajiu. He also called over Li Ming, Wu Hui, and Zheng Feng, giving each of them one as well.
While drinking, the count said to Dai'an, "You go to the back and bring out those four young ladies. After I finish my drink, let them sing a song for my dear uncle to hear. If we wait any longer, we’ll have to leave. Today we’ve only had toasts, and they’ve only sung two segments, so don’t let them off easy." Dai'an didn’t move and said, "I’ll go call them right away; they’re singing for my aunt and the ladies in the back." The count said, "You little sly one, when are you going to go? Are you trying to pull a fast one on me?" Then he called Wang Jing: "You go." Wang Jing also didn’t move. The count said, "None of you are going? Then I’ll go myself." Just as he was speaking, a fragrant breeze swept in, and laughter was heard as the four young ladies came out with handkerchiefs covering their heads. The count saw them and said, "My goodness, whose family raised you to be so well-behaved! Covering your heads but wishing to come out, how comfortable! You think you can just leave without singing for us? Not a chance! Just say the sedan chair fare is four taels of silver, and with that you could buy enough rice for your madam and your whole family to eat for a month." Dong Jiao'er said, "Brother, with such cheap food and clothing, you’re really keeping tabs on the costs." Hong Si'er said, "It’s almost two in the morning, let us go." Qi Xiang'er said, "We have to get up early tomorrow to send off a funeral outside." The count asked, "Whose family?" Qi Xiang'er replied, "It's the family under the eaves." The count said, "It’s not Wang Sanguan’s family again, is it? A few days ago, because of him, you were in trouble. Thanks to your uncle’s favor, he pleaded for Li Guier, and you were let off too. This time, the little bird isn’t in the nest." Qi Xiang'er laughed and scolded, "You old rascal, so annoying, what nonsense are you talking!" The count said, "Are you laughing at me for being old? I’m still quite charming! Dealing with you four young ladies is a piece of cake." Hong Si'er laughed and said, "Brother, you don’t look too good; you’re just full of hot air." The count said, "When it comes to my skills, you'll see what I can do when it’s time to settle up." He then said, "That little girl from the Zheng family, after eating the sugar, was silent and seemed a bit dazed. She wouldn’t be thinking about that old man at home, would she?" Dong Jiao'er said, "She was a bit scared when she heard you talking just now." The count said, "Scared or not, bring the instruments; each of you sing a segment, and then you can go. I won’t keep you." Ximen Qing said, "Alright, you two toast, and the other two sing a segment for him." Qi Xiang'er said, "Sister Yue and I will sing together." So, Zheng Yue'er played the pipa, Qi Xiang'er played the zheng, sitting on the bed, singing beautifully, their voices delicate and enchanting, performing "Night Goes and Day Comes" from "Yue Diao: Dou An Chun." Dong Jiao'er toasted Uncle Wu, and Hong Si'er toasted Count Ying, exchanging cups and cheers at the table, creating quite a lively atmosphere.
Exactly:
As the dance returns beneath the bright moon at the Qin building, singing to block the wandering clouds at the Chu Pavilion. After a few rounds of wine and a couple of songs, the four girls were sent away. Ximen Qing invited Wu Dajiu to stay a bit longer and then asked Chunhong to come up and sing a southern tune before instructing the chess boy to prepare the horse and send Dajiu off with a lantern. Dajiu said, "Brother-in-law, there's no need to prepare the horse. I'll leave with Ying'er." Ximen Qing said, "In that case, let the chess boy send you home with a lantern." Dajiu and Bao E got up to bid farewell. Ximen Qing escorted them to the gate and said to Bao E, "You must remember to make arrangements with Gan tomorrow to come see me and sign the contract. I'll let the Qiao family know to get ready to unload the goods from the other property." Bao E said, "Brother, no need to worry. I understand." With that, he said his goodbyes and left with Dajiu, while the chess boy held the lantern. Dajiu asked, "Earlier, Brother-in-law mentioned receiving the house there?" Bao E said, "Han's goods have arrived, and he's opened a new silk store, taking over the house across the street and asking me to find a partner for him." Dajiu said, "When is the shop opening? We have to get our family and friends together to celebrate." After a while, they reached the entrance of Bao E's alley, and Dajiu told the chess boy, "Take Ying'er's father home with the lantern." Bao E refused, saying, "Chess boy, you can just take Dajiu. I don't need the lantern, just go into the alley." With that, they exchanged goodbyes and went their separate ways. The chess boy then escorted Dajiu home.
Ximen Qing sent Li Ming and the others to pay the money, then went to the backyard to sleep in Yue Niang's room for the night. The next day, as expected, the count arrived with Gan Chushen, both dressed in blue, to discuss business. Ximen Qing asked Cui Ben to meet with Qiao Dahus, who was responsible for taking over the property and starting operations. Qiao Dahus told Cui Ben, "From now on, you will defer to your father-in-law on all matters, big and small." They promptly signed a contract with Gan as a partner. The count was made a guarantor, with the profit-sharing divided into ten parts: Ximen Qing five parts, Qiao Dahus three parts, and the remaining three parts split equally among Han Daoguo, Gan Chushen, and Cui Ben. Meanwhile, they built a warehouse, hung a painted sign, and waited for the cargo ship to arrive to unload goods and open for business. Additionally, they acquired an additional academy and invited Scholar Wen to be the guest teacher, specifically to teach reading, letter writing, and social etiquette to the literati. He received a monthly salary of three or two taels, with seasonal gifts throughout the year, and they also provided him with a painter and servants. Whenever Ximen Qing entertained guests at home, he often invited him to drink, but that's a story for another day.
Before they knew it, Ximen Qing's birthday had passed. The next morning, they invited Doctor Ren to see Li Ping'er, while keeping an eye on the deliveries across the street. Miss Yang headed home first, while Li Guijie and Wu Yiner still hadn't returned home. Wu Yueniang picked up three taels of crabs and cooked them for lunch, inviting Auntie and the others, including Li Guijie and Wu Yiner, to join her for lunch. When Yueniang invited Liu Pozi to see Guaner, after they had tea, Li Ping'er took her to the front room. Liu Pozi said, "Guaner was startled and needs to be weaned." She also left a few prescriptions. Yueniang gave her three taels of silver and sent her off. Meng Yulou, Pan Jinlian, Li Guijie, Wu Yiner, and the eldest sister were all under the flower rack, setting up a small table and laying out a mat, playing drinking games together. Sun Xue'e, having lost a few cups of wine to everyone, didn't want to stick around and left. They asked Li Ping'er to take her place. Jinlian also had Wu Yiner and Guijie sing a little something. That day, the sisters drank late into the night, and Yueniang packed up a box to send Li Guijie and Wu Yiner on their way.
Pan Jinlian stumbled back drunk and found that Ximen Qing had slept in Li Ping'er's room last night. He had also invited a doctor to see him this morning, which filled her with rage. She knew that Ximen Qing's child was not feeling well, so she had the worst luck when she stepped inside—stepping right into a pile of dog poop. As she walked in, she asked Chunmei to light a lamp, only to find her red satin shoes dirty. She was instantly furious, her eyes blazing. She asked Chunmei to close the door and then picked up a stick to beat the dog, making it yelp. Li Ping'er sent Yingchun to say, "My mother said that the child just took Doctor Liu's medicine, fell asleep, and asked Fifth Sister not to beat the dog." Pan Jinlian sat in silence for a while. After beating the dog for a while, she let it go and then started picking on Qiujun. The more she stared at those filthy shoes, the angrier she became. She scolded Qiujun, "This dog should have been dealt with long ago. Why is it still in the house? Is it your lover? If you don't drive it away and let it poop everywhere, it's dirtying my new shoes—I’ve only worn them for three or four days! You knew I was coming; you should've lit the lamp. Why are you playing dumb?" Chunmei said, "I told her to feed the dog and lock it in the backyard while you were away. She pretended not to hear and just stared at me." Pan Jinlian said, "Still here! You're really bold! I know you've been acting arrogantly in this house! Look, you've dirtied my shoes!" She forced Qiujun to look down and then smacked her face with the sole of her shoe, making Qiujun's lip split. She covered her face and ran away. Pan Jinlian scolded, "You thieving slave, scram!" She told Chunmei, "Drag her over here to kneel down, fetch the horsewhip, strip her clothes, and give her thirty lashes! If she resists, I'll beat her randomly!" Chunmei stripped Qiujun's clothes, and Pan Jinlian told Chunmei to hold her hands and beat her like a downpour, making Qiujun scream like a banshee. Ximen Qing had just fallen asleep but was awakened by the noise. Li Ping'er sent Xiuchun to say, "My mother asks Fifth Sister to go easy on Qiujun and not scare the child." Pan Jinlian heard Qiujun's screams and got up to step in. Seeing that Pan Jinlian didn't listen, Li Ping'er sent Xiuchun to plead again. Pan Jinlian's mother got up to stop her daughter. Seeing that Pan Jinlian didn't listen and then seeing Li Ping'er sending Xiuchun to plead, she stepped forward and snatched the whip from her daughter's hand, saying, "Sister, please don't beat her so much. Don't scare the child. Why hit a donkey with a stick and ruin the harmony?" Pan Jinlian was even more furious when she heard her mother say this. Her face turned purple, and she pushed her mother away, saying, "You old hag, go sit aside! It's none of your business, so why but in? What harmony are you talking about?" Pan Jinlian's mother said, "What do you mean by butting in? I came to your house to have a meal, and you treat me this way?" Pan Jinlian said, "You bring that old hag of yours to leave tomorrow; don't let them stew me alive!" Pan Jinlian continued to beat Qiujun, giving her thirty lashes and then ten more with a paddle, until her skin was raw and bleeding. She even scratched Qiujun's face and cheeks with her nails. Li Ping'er held her child tightly, tears rolling down her cheeks, too scared to speak.
Ximen Qing drank with the count, Cui Ben, and Gan, the assistant all day at the opposite door, then returned to the Jade Tower to rest. The next day, Zhou Shoubei was hosting a gathering, but he was not home. Li Ping'er saw that after the child took Liu Pozi's medicine, there was no reaction, and in the evening, the child was frightened, their eyes rolling back. That day, she went to the homes of Xue Guzi and Wang Guzi, and told Yue Niang, "I want to take out a pair of silver lions I've kept at the bottom of the chest and ask Xue Guzi to print the 'Buddha's Heart Sutra' to distribute on the fifteenth of August at the Yue Temple." Just as Xue Guzi was about to take them, Meng Yulou said, "Master, please wait. Ma'am, have the young servant call Ben Si to weigh them first, and then go to the sutra shop to discuss the price, how much each sutra will cost and when they can be ready. How can you handle it all by yourself?" Yue Niang said, "You are right." She then sent An'er to call Ben Si over. After greeting Yue Niang and the others, he weighed the silver lions, which totaled forty-one taels and five tenths of a tael. Yue Niang instructed Ben Si and Xue Guzi to go to the sutra shop to print the sutras.
Pan Jinlian asked Meng Yulou to accompany her to see off Ben Si and the others, and also to visit Eldest Sister, saying that Eldest Sister was inside the house making shoes. The two of them went hand in hand. Ben Si, Wang Guzi, and Xue Guzi went first. Jinlian and Yulou walked to the entrance of the east wing and saw Eldest Sister making shoes under the eaves. Jinlian picked them up and saw that the uppers of the shoes were made of sand-green Lu silk. Yulou said, "Eldest Sister, don't use this red thread; it would look better with blue and would be more durable! Are you still planning to use big red heels tomorrow?" Eldest Sister said, "I have a pair with big red heels. For this pair, I wanted blue heels, so I used red thread to stitch it." Jinlian took a look, and the three of them settled on the steps of the hall. Yulou asked Eldest Sister, "Is your son-in-law around?" Eldest Sister said, "He’s out somewhere having had a couple of drinks and fell asleep at home." Meng Yulou said to Jinlian, "If I hadn't been keeping an eye on things just now, Li Eldest Sister's money would have been taken by the nuns to print religious texts. Even if they couldn't print the religious texts, where would they have found the money? Luckily, I managed to call Ben Si in time and had him follow them."
Pan Jinlian said, "Those wealthy sisters, if they don't make some money, they're being foolish, as easy as pulling a hair from a cow. If your son is in danger, don't talk about giving up your wealth; you'd give away everything you have. In this house, others can start fires, but we can't even light a lamp. - Listen, big sister, this isn't about anyone else. He just can't get things right, but he acts so high and mighty. Early in the morning, he orders people to call a doctor to see him. He can do whatever he wants; we don't care. Always acting all high and mighty in front of others, saying, 'I'm so upset, his father insists on coming into my room to see the child, and he even wants to sleep with me, who can stand it! It's like he's deliberately pushing me into someone else's space. We're doing fine on our own, but they still gossip about us behind our backs.' Big sister believes his one-sided words. If it weren't for us, why didn't he come into your room yesterday? Why did you let the maid call him in at the corner door? Saying it's to see the child, you're taking medicine, but in the end, you made your man sleep with Wu Yiner all night, trying to show off how clever you are, pleasing your man, then big sister has nothing to say. Last night, someone stepped in dog poop in the room; the maid chased the dog, and she got angry too, letting the maid come and say it scared the child. My mom, bless her heart, didn't know, came to mediate and ended up messing up the Judas tree, like a donkey on a treadmill. I was fed up with her carefree attitude, said a few words to her, and she went back to her mother's house in a huff. - Let her go! I said, her family doesn’t have many relatives like you, but they wouldn't miss you either." Yulou smiled and said, "You uneducated child, your own mother, you actually talk back to her like that!" Jinlian said, "That's not what I meant. - Annoying person, always stirring up trouble, colluding inside and out, always speaking up for others. Eating other people's food, being at other people's beck and call. If you don't get any benefit from others, you'll praise them endlessly. - Just think about it, she worked hard to raise this child, convinced the man to be devoted to her, supported him steadily, making others envy her. Today, the heavens have eyes; her son is also sick."
Looks like there's nothing here to translate right now.
As he was speaking, Ben Si returned from the moneylender to pay the money and reported to Madame Yue that he saw Yulou, Jinlian, and Dajie sitting on the steps of the hall. He stood outside the ceremonial gate and did not dare to come in. Lai'an ran over and said, "Madame, Ben Si is here." Jinlian said, "What a strange thing; let him in, didn't you just see him coming?" After Lai'an spoke, Ben Si lowered his head, walked up to Madame Yue and Mrs. Li, and said, "Forty-one taels and five mace of silver were handed over to Zhai Jing'er's house together with the two masters. It was agreed to print 500 copies of the Lingke Tuo Luo scripture, each at five cents; and 1,000 copies of the silk-bound scripture, each at three cents. In total, it should be fifty-five taels of silver. After receiving forty-one taels and five mace, they gave back thirteen taels and five mace. They agreed to deliver the scriptures on the morning of the fourteenth." Mrs. Li quickly took out a silver incense ball from the room and had Ben Si weigh it; it came to fifteen taels. Mrs. Li said, "Take it; aside from what you give them, keep the rest and exchange it for some change. On the fifteenth, go to the temple to offer the scriptures for your travel expenses, so you won't have to come back to me again." Ben Si took the incense ball and left. Mrs. Li said, "Fourth Brother, you have worked hard." Ben Si bent down and said, "I dare not." As he walked away, Jinlian and Yulou called him back and asked, "Did you hand over the silver to the moneylender?" Ben Si said, "It has been settled. A total of 1,500 copies of the scriptures, totaling fifty-five taels of silver. In addition to the forty-one taels and five mace received, Sister Liu just handed over this silver incense ball." Yulou and Jinlian looked at each other without saying anything, and Ben Si went home. Yulou said to Jinlian, "Sister Li is throwing money away like this. If it were your children, not even a hammer could take them down; if they are not your children, let alone offering scriptures or making statues, you can't keep them at all. Trust those nuns, they're capable of anything!"
The two of them chatted for a bit and then stood up. Jin Lian said, "Let's go for a walk by the main gate." She asked the older sister, "Are you coming with us?" The older sister said, "I'm not going with you." Pan Jin Lian took Yu Lou's hand, and they walked outside to stand by the main gate. Then they asked Ping An, "Is the house across the way all set up?" Ping An said, "Oh, that? My dad checked it yesterday, and it was all cleaned. The back building is stacked with goods; we had a geomancer come in to break ground yesterday, and we still need to install three rooms downstairs. The storage will hold silk, and the storefront will have three rooms in a row when it opens, all freshly painted by the crew, and it will open next month." Yu Lou asked again, "Has that scholar, Wen, moved in with his family yet?" Ping An said, "They moved in yesterday. This morning, my dad told them to take apart the bed in the back for him and moved two tables and four chairs for him to use." Jin Lian said, "Did you get a look at what his wife looks like?" Ping An said, "She came sitting in a sedan chair, dark and hard to see; who really got a good look at her?"
Just as they were talking, they saw an old man from afar, swaying as he approached with his mirror-polishing burden. Pan Jinlian said, "The mirror polisher is here!" She said to Ping An, "Go and stop him, ask him to polish our mirrors. My mirrors have been damaged lately. You little rascal, why didn't you call him over sooner? We've been standing here for so long, and only now does the mirror polisher arrive!" Ping An quickly stopped the old mirror polisher, who set down his pole. Jinlian asked Yulou next, "Do you want your mirror polished? Have the servant bring it out; we can polish them together." Then she said to Lai'an, "Go to my room, ask Chunmei for my big mirror, two small mirrors, and my square dressing mirror; bring them out for him to polish well." Yulou also asked Lai'an to go to her room and have Lanxiang bring out her mirrors. Lai'an came back soon after, holding a mix of small and large mirrors in both hands, and the square dressing mirror in his arms. Jinlian said, "You naughty boy, if you can't carry them all at once, just make a few trips. What if you drop all my mirrors and break them?" Yulou said, "I've never seen a mirror this big before; where did it come from?" Jinlian said, "It was given to me by someone; I thought it was bright and kept it in the room to use morning and night." Then she asked, "Do I only have three mirrors?" Yulou said, "I only have two, one large and one small." Jinlian said, "Whose are these two?" Lai'an said, "These two belong to Sister Chunmei; I brought them out to be polished as well." Jinlian said, "That little troublemaker! She never uses her own mirrors, just mine all the time, and now look—my mirrors are all worn out!" In total, there were eight mirrors of different sizes, which they handed over to the old mirror polisher to polish. The old man set the mirrors on the stand, wiped them with mercury, and after a while, the mirrors were polished bright and dazzling. The women held the mirrors to their faces, shining like a clear autumn pond.
A poem as proof:
Lotus leaves and water caltrops reflect together, as the wind stirs, shadows dance on the deep blue water. In the pond, autumn lotus flowers appear, like Chang'e beside the moon.
After the women finished looking in the mirror, they asked Lai An to put the mirror back. Yulou asked Ping An to go to the store and ask the shopkeeper for fifty wen to pay the mirror polisher. The old man took the money but stood there motionless. Yulou asked Ping An to ask him, "Why haven't you left yet? Isn't the money enough?" Tears started streaming down the old man's face, and he began to cry. Ping An said, "Our grandmother wants to know what's bothering you." The old man said, "To be honest with you, I am sixty-one years old this year. I have a son who's twenty-two and still unmarried, lazy and good-for-nothing. I go out every day to earn money to support him. He doesn't listen to me, always gambling with the ruffians on the street. Yesterday, he got into trouble, was given twenty lashes for being a bandit. When he came back, he even sold his mother's clothes. His mother got sick with anger, had a fever, and was bedridden for half a month. I advised him a few words, but he ran away and didn't come home. I look for him every day, but can't find him. I thought about giving up looking for him out of anger, but I'm so old; he's the only son I have, and no one will attend to me in the future. He's at home, but he's not doing well, and he makes me angry. Alas, it's all my fault! I'm upset and venting to everyone, so I couldn't help but cry." Yulou asked Ping An, "How old is your daughter-in-law this year?" The old man said, "She's fifty-five this year, hasn't had children, just recovered from illness, hasn't recovered yet, and wants to eat some cured meat. I asked around the street for several days and didn't get a piece of cured meat. It's really pitiful!" Yulou said, "It's okay, I just happen to have a piece of cured meat in the drawer at home." She said to Lai An, "Go tell Lanxiang that there are two more cakes; let her bring them to you." Jinlian asked, "Old man, does your mother like to eat millet porridge?" The old man said, "She loves it! Where on earth can I find some? Millet porridge is so good!" Jinlian also asked Lai An to go, "Go tell Chunmei to measure two liters of new millet that your grandma brought yesterday, and bring out two pickled cucumbers for his mother to eat." Lai An soon brought half a leg of cured meat, two cakes, two liters of millet, and two pickled cucumbers, saying, "Old man, you're quite lucky! Your mother is sick and wants to eat something; maybe she's pregnant and wants something comforting!" The old man quickly took the things with both hands, put them in his burden, bowed to Yulou and Jinlian, picked up his burden, and walked away unsteadily. Ping An said, "The two grandmas shouldn't have given him so many things; he's pulling a fast one on them. His mother is a matchmaker; she walked down this street yesterday. Why did she come at this time?" Jinlian said, "You little brat, why didn't you say so earlier?" Ping An said, "Forget it; he's quite lucky. Luckily, the two grandmas spotted him and ended up giving him so much."

It is indeed: leaning idly against the door frame, I unexpectedly catch sight of an elderly figure in the startled chamber. Not only can the delicate and subtle be of assistance, but even a single drop of water cannot be accomplished without cause.
Legend has it that there is a Yongfu Temple in Dongping Prefecture, Shandong Province, established in the second year of the Liang Dynasty under Emperor Wu, founded by Master Wanhuai. So, why is he called Master Wanhuai? Because when he was seven or eight years old, his older brother joined the army, and there was no word on whether he was alive or dead. His mother cried all day. One day, the child asked his mother, "Mother, our family is living well, why do you keep crying? Tell me, I'll help share your worries." His mother said, "Child, you wouldn't understand! Your father is dead, your brother has been in the army for several years, with no news at all; how can I stand it!" As she said this, tears began to flow again. The child said, "Oh, really? What’s so hard about that? Mother, where is my brother? I'll go find him and bring back a message so you can stop worrying, okay?" His mother laughed through her tears, "Silly child, if your brother were just a hundred or two hundred miles away, it wouldn’t be a problem, but he’s in Liaodong, thousands of miles away. Even a strong man would take four or five months to get there; how can a child like you go?" The child said, "Even if he is in Liaodong, he's not off in the clouds; I will go find him!" He tied his shoes, straightened his clothes, bowed to his mother, and then took off like a shot. His mother couldn't stop him or catch up, and she became even more anxious. Neighbors came to persuade her, "The child is still young; how can he go so far? He will come back in a few days." Only then did his mother finally stop crying and sit quietly.
As the sun was setting, his mother looked around nervously and saw a small figure in the distance coming back. She thought to herself: "God bless, if my son is back, all my vegetarian meals and prayers would be worth it." She saw her son kneel down and say, "Mother, you're still awake? I've already made it to Liaodong and brought you a letter of safety." His mother smiled and said, "Child, you didn't have to go so far, saving me the worry. Don't tease me, how could you travel thousands of miles in a day?" The child said, "Mother, don't you believe me? Look!" He opened his bundle, took out the letter of safety, which was indeed written by his brother. He also took out an undershirt sewn by his grandmother, just like it. This drew the attention of the neighbors, who started calling him "Ten Thousand Returns." Later, he became a monk and was known as "Elder Ten Thousand Returns." He had great spiritual prowess and incredible powers, once swallowing two liters of iron needles in front of Shi Hu of Later Zhao, and taking out three relics from the top of his head in front of Emperor Wu of Liang. Therefore, Emperor Wu of Liang ordered the construction of the Yongfu Zen Temple as the ancestral hall of Elder Ten Thousand Returns, the cost of which is unknown.
Time flies, and the world changes. After the Great Ancestor passed away, those pleasure-seeking monks fell into depravity one by one. Only a few lazy monks remained in the temple, marrying wives, drinking alcohol, and getting into all sorts of trouble! In just a few days, they pawned the temple's robes, the bells, and the wooden fish, and exchanged the rafters and bricks of the hall for wine. The temple fell into disrepair, the Buddha statues collapsed, and it was desolate; the once-familiar sounds of bells and drums were now replaced by the rustle of wild grass and swirling smoke. For decades, no one bothered to repair it. Later, an elder from the West Indies, seeking tranquility in China, traveled through mountains and rivers for nearly a decade and finally arrived in China. He came to Shandong and spent nine years in silence within this dilapidated temple, truly contemplating:
The Buddha's teachings have no obstacles in words; one must seek the truth diligently in meditation.
One day, he suddenly thought, “This temple has fallen into such disrepair because of those lazy monks; it’s truly a pity! If I don’t take action today, who will? Moreover, there’s a wealthy official named Ximen Qing in Shandong, a member of the Jinyiwei, who recently held a banquet for Inspector Cai. He has seen the temple’s ruin and wants to rebuild it. If he can advocate for it, reconstruction will be imminent. I must pay him a visit.” Thus, he gathered his disciples, rang the bell and beat the drum, announcing the plan to rebuild the temple. What did this elder look like?
His Zen robe stained with crimson, with golden earrings dangling from both ears. In his hand, a staff shining like a mirror, with a hundred and eight pearls shimmering in the sunlight. Enlightenment lights the way, while money is the means; lifting the dreams of ordinary people awakens them. With thick brows, dark hair, and copper bell-like eyes, he was indeed an old holy monk from the Western Paradise.
After announcing his plan, the elder had his disciples bring the four treasures of the study to write a letter. This elder was truly the reincarnation of a Buddha or a Bodhisattva. He bid farewell to everyone, slipped on his Zen shoes, donned a bamboo hat, and made his way straight to Ximen Qing's house.
After bidding farewell to Ying Bojue, Ximen Qing returned to Wu Yuemiong's place and told her about Ying Bojue's recommendation of Shui Xiucai. Then he said, "I went to Dongjing a few days ago and many friends invited me to drink. Now I need to return the hospitality. I have some free time today, so let's get this done." He called for Daian and told him to get some food and drinks. He also instructed the servants to invite the guests separately. Then he took Yuemiong to see the little official at Li Pin'er's place. Li Pin'er smiled and brought out the little official. The kid was cute, like a little doll, and happily went into Yuemiong's arms. Yuemiong took him and said, "My child, you are so obedient. When you grow up, you will definitely be smart and clever." She also said to the kid, "You better be good to your mom!" Li Pin'er said, "What are you saying! Even if he becomes an official one day, he must first respect you, making sure you get your phoenix crown and fancy robes first!" Ximen Qing interjected, "Son, when you grow up, you should take the civil service exam, don't follow your father to become a military officer. Although it's glamorous, it's not as respectable." Just then, Pan Jinlian heard it outside, got really mad and started yelling, "Shameless whore, all you do is pop out kids! It hasn't been a few days since the Yellow Plum Festival, he's still just a little kid, raised by the King of Hell, how's he gonna be an official, or an old lady for that matter? Bad thing, shameless, how can you think of becoming a civil servant, not wanting to learn from your father!" She grumbled and cursed under her breath. At this time, Daian came in and said, "Fifth Madam, the Master’s in the hall." Pan Jinlian cursed, "You little brat, who do you think you are! Why are you coming to my room? He’s got his own mom to take care of him, you don't need to ask here!" Daian realized he was in the wrong place, turned around and went to Sixth Madam's room. When he reached the door, he coughed and said to Ximen Qing, "Second Master is in the hall." Ximen Qing said, "Second Master just left, why is he back?" Daian said, "He’ll figure it out when he steps outside."
" "
Ximen Qing had to leave Lady Yu and Li Ping'er and walk outside. Just as he was about to ask what was the matter with Ying Bojue, he saw a monk begging for alms come to Ximen Qing's doorstep and shout loudly, "Amitabha! Is this Master Ximen's house? Could the steward come out and announce: 'Supporting Guizi, safeguarding Lansun, seeking blessings and longevity. - Elder from the Tokyo alms-giving group requesting an audience.'" Ximen Qing was a generous spender and had just had a son, so he was happy and wanted to do something good to bless his child. The servants understood the situation and didn't stop him; they quickly went in to report to Ximen Qing. Ximen Qing said, "Let him in." After a while, the monk was ushered into the flower hall, greeted, and said, "This humble monk comes from West India, traveled to Tokyo Bianliang, practiced at Yongfu Temple for nine years, and gained some understanding. It's just that the temple has been in disrepair for many years, and as a disciple of the Buddha, I must do my part for the faith, so I had this idea. A few days ago when the elderly donors were departing, they also pitied the dilapidated temple and were willing to help. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas bear witness. The Buddhist scriptures say: if someone donates money to repair a Buddha statue, they can bless their descendants, bring them honor, wealth, and early success in the imperial examinations. So I came to seek help; no matter how much, I hope the donors will have a kind heart and accumulate merit." He opened a brocade cloth, took out a donation ledger, and handed it over with both hands. Ximen Qing was deeply moved when he heard this, gladly accepted the donation ledger, and asked a servant to bring tea. When he opened it, it read:
The teachings of the White Horse that opened the path to the Elephant's teachings. In all corners of the earth, monks all revere the Buddha; in the three thousand worlds, all are adorned like a pure land. What is this crumbling rubble compared to the majestic mountains and beautiful landscapes? If one does not cultivate compassion and generosity, how can one be called a child of the Buddha? Now there is the Yongfu Zen Temple, an ancient site of Buddhist practice, a place of cultivation and blessings. Founded by Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty, the mountain was established by the great master Wan Hui. The regulations are grand, reminiscent of the Golden Paved Ground of the Solitary Garden; the intricately carved halls, faintly resembling the White Jade Steps of the Deer Park. High towers reach the sky, the fragrant sandalwood scent wafts directly to the clouds; the multi-tiered foundation stretches across the earth, and the Great Hero Hall can accommodate a thousand Zen monks. The two wings are magnificent, all are palatial and resplendent; the corridors are clean, indeed a refined and wondrous cave of heaven. At that time, the sound of bells and drums proclaimed it to be the Buddha's land in the world; yet this stream of monks, like the dust of the earthly realm, continues to flow. Little did they know, as the years passed, that time would bring change. The reckless monk indulged in wine and mischief, destroying the clear precepts; the lazy practitioner was greedy for sleep and did not engage in cleaning. Gradually, it became desolate, cutting off disciples; leading to sorrow, rarely visited. Additionally, the birds and rodents gnawed at it, unable to withstand the winds and rains. The buildings collapsed, one after another, supporting structures failed; the walls crumbled, day after day, year after year, stirring up no one. The vermilion window frames, a dozen or so for brewing wine and tea; the supporting beams were taken to exchange for salt and rice. The wind blew, the golden Arhats vanished; the rain fell, the Amitabha turned to dust. Alas! The once brilliant gold and jade have become overgrown with wild brambles. Although there are successes and failures, ultimately, after extreme hardship comes great peace. Fortunately, there are sincere elder monks who cannot bear to see the decay of the Brahma King's palace. They make great vows, knocking on the door of the temple. I sincerely wish for compassion to arise, and for deep empathy to flourish. Regardless of the size of the wooden beams and pillars, they should be inscribed with the names of those who give; as for money and cloth, regardless of wealth, they should be offered and recorded in the ledger. Relying on the Buddha's divine power, may blessings and longevity be granted for hundreds and thousands of years; leaning on the clear mirror of the monastery, may fathers, sons, and grandsons all receive abundant blessings and high positions. May the blessings be endless, flourishing like the three locust trees and five laurels; may the entrance be grand, shining with golden wealth and resources. In all pursuits, may good fortune and wishes be fulfilled. As the document is delivered, may all greed be broken. Sincerely, I submit this.
After Ximen Qing finished reading the donation document, he respectfully placed it on the table and said to the elder, "To be honest with you, although I am not a big deal, I do have some wealth and serve as a military officer. However, I am getting older and still do not have a son, so I want to do some good deeds to accumulate merit. Last year, my sixth concubine had a child, and I am already very satisfied. This time, passing by here while sending a friend, I saw the temple in disrepair and decided to donate some money for the repairs. Since you are willing to accept it, how could I possibly refuse?" Holding a brush in his hand, he hesitated. Ying Boke said, "Brother, since you are so kind to pray for your nephew, why not decide for yourself? This is not a big deal." Ximen Qing smiled and said, "I'm not in a position to give more." Boke said again, "At least make a donation of one thousand taels." Ximen Qing smiled again and said, "I'm not in a position to give more." The elder spoke up, "Donor, I don't mean to intrude, but in Buddhism, we emphasize giving freely according to one's means, without forcing anyone. What matters is your sincerity. Besides, please also tell your relatives and friends." Ximen Qing said, "You are reasonable, elder. At least I should donate, so let's go with five hundred taels." He put down the brush, and the elder thanked him. Ximen Qing said again, "I have good relationships with eunuchs, officials, and county officials. Tomorrow, I will take the donation document to them and encourage them to donate too. Whether they donate three hundred, two hundred, or one hundred and fifty taels, we can make this happen." That day, Ximen Qing invited the elder to have a vegetarian meal and saw him off. It's a wealthy family's duty to do good deeds with compassion, bringing blessings and peace to parents' hearts.
Ximen Qing saw the elder off, returned to the hall, sat down with Ying Bojue, and said, "I was just about to send someone to invite you, and I want to thank you all for your hospitality. A few days ago, I went to Tokyo, and today I am hosting a banquet to express my gratitude, and I would like to invite Second Brother to join us. I didn't expect to run into this elder, which delayed me a bit." Bojue said, "This elder indeed seems very virtuous. When he speaks, even I feel like making a donation." Ximen Qing said, "When did you start being a benefactor? When did you write the donation document?" Ying Bojue laughed and said, "Brother, you don't know. The Buddhist scriptures say that the first kind of giving is giving from the heart, the second is giving through the Dharma, and only the third is giving material wealth. Isn't this considered giving from the heart?" Ximen Qing laughed and said, "Second Brother, you're probably just saying that." The two laughed heartily, and Ying Bojue said, "I'll wait here for the guests; you should go discuss things with Sister-in-law."
Ximen Qing bid farewell to Bojue, returned to the inner courtyard, only to find Pan Jinlian endlessly chattering, looking listless and tired, sneezing several times, walking to the room, and falling asleep on the ivory bed. Because the child was crying, Li Ping'er was sitting in the room with the wet nurse and maidservant. Meanwhile, only Wu Yueniang and Sun Xue'e were busy preparing dinner. Ximen Qing sat down in front of them and detailed the elder's fundraising efforts and his own writing of the donation document, as well as the joke with Ying Bojue. Everyone chatted happily for a while. Wu Yueniang was a serious person after all, calmly spoke a few words that pierced Ximen Qing's heart like a needle. A virtuous wife is a reminder at dawn; her kind words are often like healing advice.
Yue Niang said, "Brother, you are truly blessed to have a child, and you have developed a kind heart, establishing good relationships. Isn't this a blessing for our whole family? I'm just worried that good thoughts are scarce while evil thoughts are plentiful. Brother, in the future, try to engage in fewer improper activities and accumulate more good deeds; it will be good for the child!" Ximen Qing laughed and said, "You're getting jealous again. The universe has yin and yang, and men and women naturally need to cooperate. The affairs and casual liaisons in this life are all predestined from past lives; settling them in this life isn't just happenstance, is it? We hear that the Buddha in the West also paves the ground with gold, and the underworld requires money for arrangements. As long as we use our family wealth for good deeds, even if I were to abduct Chang'e, violate the Weaving Maiden, kidnap Xu Feiqiong, or steal the Queen Mother of the West's daughter, it wouldn't take away from my wealth." Yue Niang laughed and said, "A dog eats fresh dung, thinking it's fragrant; how can one change once blood has fallen into their teeth!"
At that moment, Wang Guzi and Xue Guzi walked in with a box, greeted Yue Niang, and bowed to Ximen Qing, saying, "Sir, you are home." Yue Niang gestured for them to sit. Ladies and gentlemen, it turns out that Xue Guzi didn't become a nun from a young age; she was married when she was young and sold steamed buns at the entrance of Guangcheng Temple. Business was poor, and she flirted with the monks and young monks in the temple, getting involved with several of them. She often brought them buns and vegetarian meals as offerings and even bought them flowers and fabric for binding feet with the money she had to spare. Her husband knew nothing about it! Later, her husband passed away, and due to her familiarity with the temple, she became a nun. She specifically networked with wealthy families and organized religious services. She also helped women looking to steal men make connections. Hearing that Ximen Qing's family was wealthy and had many concubines, she hoped to gain some advantages, so she came often. There is a folk song that says it well:
"Nuns are born bald, while monks are busy every night. Three bald heads look like master, senior brother, and junior brother; but where are the cymbals in bed?"
Xue Guzi opened the small box and said, "We don't have much to offer you, so we've brought a few fruits for the Buddha, just to make a fresh offering." Yue Niang said, "If you want to come, just come; why bother with all this effort?" Pan Jinlian was sleeping in the house. When she heard someone talking outside, it reminded her of earlier, so she came out to see what was going on. She saw Li Ping'er inside with the child and knew that Wang Guzi was also there. She wanted to talk to them about praying for the official's son. So, they all went to Yue Niang's room together. They greeted each other and then sat down. Ximen Qing, seeing that Li Ping'er had arrived, repeated the matter of donating to the Taoist priest to create an opportunity for himself and to pray for the official's son. Unexpectedly, this upset Pan Jinlian, who turned and walked away, muttering under her breath. Xue Guzi heard this, stood up with her palms together, and said, "Buddha! You're so kind and do good deeds; you’ll surely live a long life and have many descendants! However, I have one more thing to tell you—this good deed may not cost much, but it can bring immeasurable blessings. Oh, if you do this, it would surpass the merits of old Qutanshan's cultivation, the flowers scattered by Kasyapa, and the second patriarch who fed tigers by throwing himself off a cliff, all of which cannot compare to your virtue!" Ximen Qing smiled and said, "Auntie, please sit down and slowly talk about this virtue; I am listening." Xue Guzi said, "Our Buddha left behind a scroll of the 'Dharani Sutra,' specifically to encourage people to go to the Western Paradise. Because ordinary people do not believe, the Buddha taught this sutra, urging you to focus on chanting the Buddha's name and go to the West, never to reincarnate again. The Buddha said well that if someone recites this sutra or prints and copies it, and encourages one person to chant it among thousands or millions, they will gain immeasurable merit. Moreover, this sutra also contains the 'Sutra for Protecting Children'; any family that has children must sincerely recite this sutra for their children to be well taken care of, to avoid disasters, and to receive blessings. Now this sutra board is right here, but no one is printing and circulating it. If you just invest some money to print a few thousand copies, bind them well, and distribute them widely, that merit will be great!" Ximen Qing said, "This is not difficult; I just need to know how much paper, binding, and printing costs this scroll will require. If I have a specific number, I can make arrangements." Xue Guzi said, "Don't worry about the details; just pay nine taels of silver first, let the sutra workshop print several million copies, bind them well, and we can figure out the details later."

Just as he was speaking, Chen Jingji wanted to talk to Ximen Qing. He walked to the bottom of the pergola and happened to meet Pan Jinlian sulking there alone. Chen Jingji saw her and was like a cat that’s just spotted a fish. Pan Jinlian instantly cast aside all her troubles. When they saw no one around, they held hands and embraced each other intimately, kissing each other. After a while, they were afraid that Ximen Qing would come out and see them, so they didn't even think about settling the score. They glanced around nervously, fearing they might be spotted. With no private spot to continue, they quickly slipped away.
After listening to what Xue Guzi had said, Ximen Qing also felt compassionate. He asked Dai An to bring a box, took out thirty taels of silver, and handed it to Xue Guzi and Wang Guzi, saying, "Go to the temple and help me print five thousand volumes of scriptures. After they are printed, I'll sort out the payment with you later." Just as he was speaking, Shu Tong hurriedly came to report, "The guests have all arrived." The guests were Wu Dajiu, Hua Dajiu, Xie Xidai, and Chang Zhijie. Ximen Qing quickly tidied up his clothes and went out to greet them, arranging for the guests to be seated. Soon, fish and fruit were brought out. Everyone drank and chatted, having a great time, playing games, beating drums, and singing songs, making it a lively scene. It was truly:
Autumn moons and spring flowers abound, sharing joyful moments together.
