The Han Dynasty had just established the country and brought peace to all corners of the country. The southern tribes all surrendered after five successful military campaigns and three major reforms. Even in times of peace and prosperity, we must remain vigilant, bolster our military strength, and promote culture. We hold banquets for our guests and soldiers to express reverence to the heavens, seeking eternal peace and security. Future generations will enjoy long, carefree lives like majestic pine trees, while the people live in peace and contentment.
Selecting exceptional military officers and soldiers, swords and crossbows are arranged in neat order. They respond to orders, obey discipline, and move swiftly like warriors from the heavens. We have secured stability through military strength while also emphasizing benevolence, with guests from all over coming to congratulate.
My achievements have been accomplished, and the people have settled down. We hold a grand banquet in the spacious courtyard to entertain guests and soldiers, showcasing our achievements in both civil and military realms, pacifying the entire country, and comforting the people. Blessed by the heavens, I have been granted longevity. I hope that even a thousand years later, people will not forget my accomplishments.
The brave army, well-trained soldiers, and strict discipline. Generous benevolence and powerful momentum sweep everything away. Since ancient times, no one has surpassed me in achieving greatness. We have valiantly conquered all directions, with our influence even reaching the seaside. The Han Dynasty will thrive for eternity, with its legacy cherished by generations to come.
"The Holy Emperor Chapter" "Mao Yu" Chapter One:
The Holy Emperor, with immense virtue, shines across the seas. Rituals and music are like shadows, with civil and military as the front and back, thus giving rise to "Ba Yu." The dancers perform, swords and crossbows are lined up, and spears and halberds mark the beginning. Advance and retreat like swift falcons, dragons battle as leopards rise. Disorder must not be chaotic, actions follow reason, and there is harmony in unity and separation.
This poem praises the merits of the sacred emperor, whose virtues illuminate the four corners of the earth. Rituals and music go hand in hand, and civil governance complements military achievements, resulting in the creation of the dance piece "Bayu." Dancers hold swords and crossbows, and spears as the opening act, moving swiftly like eagles and fiercely like battling dragons and tigers. While the dance may seem chaotic, it is actually quite orderly, following certain rules.
"The Short Weapon Chapter" "Sword Yu" Part Two:
The sword is a short weapon, wielding a perilous momentum. Faster than lightning, spinning with precision. The martial spirit resonates in harmony, sometimes converging, sometimes diverging. Lightning-like speed, shining brightly. Military tactics reflect one another, and the military's appearance is dignified.
The sword is a short weapon, its combat style dangerous and fast. The speed exceeds lightning, spinning freely, movements following rules. The dance movements are uniform, sometimes together, sometimes dispersed. Swift as lightning, bright as stars, unpredictable yet orderly movements. This embodies the essence of military tactics and the majesty of the army.
"The Military Garrison Chapter" "Crossbow Yu" Part Three:
The crossbow is the backbone of the army's long-range capabilities, precise in its shots. Though cumbersome, it fires swiftly and powerfully. Sharp and precise, hitting distant targets. The music of "Crossbow Yu" is truly amazing! With varied movements, retreating fiercely and advancing swiftly. Five notes in harmony, eight tones in unison. Proclaiming military prowess while praising the might of the heavens.
The crossbow is a long-range weapon, the pillar of the army's defense, with precise shots. The crossbow is heavy, but the shot is extremely fast and powerful. The dancers' movements are refined, demonstrating the precision of crossbow arrows hitting distant targets. This "Crossbow Yu" music is truly wonderful! The dance movements are varied, fierce in retreat like a raging river, swift in advance like a flying bird. Five notes in harmony, eight tones in unison, showcasing military might while praising the majesty of the heavens.
"The Impoverished Military Chapter" "An Tai Xing Luan" Part Four:
(This section is empty, to be continued)
It is said that relying solely on military force will ultimately lead to failure; this is not mere talk, even nations may perish because of it. The lessons of Qin Shihuang and King Xu Yan should serve as a warning. The wise ancient kings understood this principle well, so they emphasized both cultural development and military strength. Only when civil and military affairs complement each other can a country prosper and develop.
As the saying goes: "The higher you climb, the colder it gets, and the fuller the water, the more it overflows." Arrogance and complacency will inevitably bring danger, and peaks inevitably decline. To avoid danger and decline, one must maintain stability and remain calm and composed when facing challenges, to achieve lasting stability and clarity. Only when civil and military affairs are combined can one conform to the will of heaven.
The lyrics of the "Feathered Flute Dance Song" depict the flourishing scenes from ancient times through the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. In the era of Fuxi, when heaven and earth were first created, people used nets to hunt birds and animals, living in peace. Shennong taught people to farm; although the work of pioneering was difficult, the people had food and lived worry-free. The Yellow Emperor began his conquests, establishing order in all things; his army was perpetually engaged in battles, hence known as Xuanyuan. After Xuanyuan, the eras of Yao and Shun were marked by peace, Xia Yu controlled the waters, and Tang and Wu used military force. Who can be content with enjoyment, sitting back and enjoying peace?
Those sagacious and virtuous emperors ruled with diligence; their achievements were celebrated far and wide, their virtues shining brightly. The wise and virtuous emperors spread their teachings throughout the world, clarifying the four seas, making heaven and earth bright, managing affairs in an orderly manner, enabling the people to live in peace and prosperity. The concealed dragon soars, and the phoenix takes flight; wind and rain harmonize, all things thrive, and good fortune descends. Virtuous individuals are valued, and the people enjoy countless blessings of longevity and health.
"The Dance of Feathers and Bells" traces back to a distant past, before the separation of heaven and earth, when the dual energies of yin and yang began to separate, and all things were born from chaos, establishing the order of human society, with the people living in peace and prosperity under the rule of a wise monarch. After the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, dynasties rose and fell, with continuous cycles of governance and turmoil. The Great Jin Dynasty inherited the excellent traditions of ancient times, surpassing even Fuxi, Shennong, Shun, Yu, and the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. It inherited the ritual music system of the Zhou Dynasty, which involved much more than merely passing down the "Xiaoshao" music and dance over six generations; it was a blessing for the land and a guide for the people. With a wise monarch and dedicated ministers in power, the world was peaceful and harmonious. The boundless vitality, lofty and serene, with the five elements in motion, the sun and moon changing, all things growing with the seasons, the wise emperor inherited the mandate of heaven, benefiting the people, governing with virtue and ensuring peace for all, enjoying the blessings bestowed by the heavens, with the national fortune continuing endlessly.
For tonight's sacrifice, we have prepared offerings and will conduct the ritual with reverence. "I present my offerings with respect. I offer this sacrifice at the auspicious time." We hope the deities can feel our sincerity and bless us. "The gods see our sincerity and are pleased with our offerings. The gods accept the feast, with the heart of filial piety and respect."
Ah, how quickly time passes! For today's sacrifice, we hope the deities will descend. "Oh, the day is here. Offer the sacrifice in time, and the deities will descend." If the deities descend, it signifies their blessing upon us, and we hope our country will prosper forever. "The deities have descended, blessing our feast. May our prosperity be boundless, receiving the blessings of heaven." We give thanks to the ancestors of the Supreme Emperor and the Holy Ancestor, as well as all the ancestors before them, who laid the foundation for us. "The illustrious Supreme Emperor, the majestic Holy Ancestor. Illustrious ancestors, we honor and carry on your legacy."
We begin constructing ancestral temples to pray for the blessings of the deities. "To commence the ancestral temple, may the gods be appeased." We hope the gods can bless our descendants and grant us blessings. "May blessings extend without limits, and may we only receive the offerings. O venerable ancestors, bring peace to us grandchildren. May blessings abound for generations to come."
In the courtyard, music resounds while sacrifices are offered in the hall. "Joyful music fills the courtyard, offerings are made in the hall." Emperor Jing, wise and intelligent. "The emperor of Jing, bright and wise." He was dignified and orderly, respectful and cautious. "Dignified and solemn, only reverence and fear." He inherited the legacy of his ancestors, completed his achievements. "Inheriting the legacy, confirming the achievements. Ascend to this glorious reign, rectify the wicked. Steadfast in his position, the emperor works diligently. It is the mandate of heaven, to be revered without cease."
Emperor Wen of Jin excelled in both civil governance and military prowess. "During the reign of Emperor Huang in Jin, Wen was a wise and virtuous ruler." He was intelligent and wise, possessing wisdom and martial strength. "Intelligent and wise, reverent and martial." He handled state affairs methodically, ensuring the stability of the country. "A myriad of affairs are well-managed, ensuring the emperor maintains order. Tigers and leopards are tamed, and the emperor ensures peace." He was adept at uniting distant and neighboring vassals, promoting talented individuals. "He is gentle yet able to command respect, appointing virtuous talents. He establishes his achievements and continues the imperial lineage, his merit and virtue reaching the heavens."
It is said that the Jin Dynasty has always been like this, following seasonal rituals. Respect is paid in ancestral temples, and ceremonies with complete music and etiquette are held grandly. People from every corner of the realm come to pay their respects, observing proper etiquette in a grand setting. Sacrificial offerings are neatly arranged, fine wines and delicacies are prepared. I climbed Kunlun Mountain and then ascended Zengcheng, riding a dragon through the pure realm of Taiqing. With the sun and moon as my crown, adorned with five stars and waving a robe of rainbow colors, I hoisted a comet flag. Draped in auspicious clouds and surrounded by prosperity, I surveyed the farthest reaches of the eight directions, touring the heavenly court. In accordance with the laws of heaven and earth and harmonizing yin and yang, I arranged the four seasons, radiating the three lights. Casting the great net of the Heavenly Emperor, I established the royal family's regulations, spreading the gentle spring breeze of compassion and bringing forth blessings and peace. Advancing grand teachings and showcasing divine majesty, I embraced people from all corners, welcoming the various tribes of the nine regions. In the presence of the Heavenly Emperor, I held a grand banquet in the Purple Palace.
Raising five flags and arranging musical instruments like bells and chimes, I assembled the troops from four counties, performing the "Shao" and "Wu" musical pieces. The resonant sounds of metal and stone fill the air, banners and feathers flutter in the breeze, the eight dancers move gracefully, and the Bayu dance is equally vibrant. Reciting the "Ya" and "Song" poems with harmonized music, everyone joyfully revels, praising our wise monarch.
The nurturing qi is boundless; a gentle breeze blows. Gathering heroes from every walk of life to govern the country, I expanded into a vast universe, securing the borders against the four tribes. - From the Fifteenth Chapter of the Right Ya Music Ceremony Poem
Oh, my great emperor, benevolent and magnanimous, with noble virtues shining like the sun and moon, comparable to the universe. Educating the kings, emulating the Yellow Emperor and Xuanyuan. Your wise decisions shape destiny, proclaimed to all vassals in every direction.
All vassals, as well as civil and military officials, dressed in their finest, eagerly awaiting dawn to pay their respects. Feasting on rare delicacies, accompanied by the music of the Nine Shao, admiring your heavenly countenance, your virtues are illustrious.
Laws and regulations have been established, the grand banquet has commenced. Civil and military officials stand in line, dignified in the court. Drinking moderately, maintaining proper decorum, respectfully in their positions, always maintaining a sense of awe.
And so, the grand celebration commences, with the music of "Si Xia" playing first, praising the virtues of the Nine Achievements and the prosperity of the Six Generations. The melodies are enchanting, conveying the emperor's good governance and the poetic teachings of civilization. In this era of peace and prosperity, everything flourishes, the grandeur of the celebration has spread far and wide, and now it has finally come to fruition. Then, as the guests enter, the music changes accordingly, with different tunes playing in the four corners, creating a majestic and solemn atmosphere, truly "harmonious and prosperous, with all things thriving."
Next, they sang the ceremonial song, praising the prosperity of the Great Song Dynasty, tracing its historical origins, extolling the emperor's saintly virtues and radiance, and the song overflowed with wishes for the nation's prosperity. "Great is the Emperor of the Song Dynasty, bringing prosperity, continuing the lineage of the Han, and inheriting the source of the Tang." "The dragon soars to the Purple Forbidden Enclave, creating our Song capital. The light illuminates the universe, shining brightly." The song was grand and majestic.
Then, the royal ministers offered longevity toasts, wishing the emperor endless longevity, and this longevity song expressed infinite reverence for the emperor. "Presenting the longevity toast, celebrating the holy emperor. May the blessings be boundless, and may the brightness continue to shine." These few words conveyed endless blessings and expectations.
The song resonated once more in front of the palace, praising the prosperous scene of the Great Song Dynasty, full of praise for the emperor and expectations for the future prosperity of the country. "The illustrious Great Song, flourishing with the imperial way. May the heavens bestow blessings, and the light of heaven protect." The song echoed in the palace, as if narrating the glory and stability of the Great Song Dynasty. This grand scene, abundant in ceremony and music, both dignified and solemn, truly embodied "abundant ceremony and music, majestic and solemn." The song also depicted the scene of the courtiers respectfully and orderly, as well as the emperor's benevolent rule influencing the people. "When one person embodies it, it serves as a model for all nations."
Finally, the singing rose again, praising the emperor's wisdom and the prosperity of the country, expressing good wishes for the long-term stability of the nation. "Oh, our emperor, born of heavenly grace. Walking the path of a new beginning, we celebrate the nation's prosperity. May it endure as long as the heavens and shine as brightly as the sun. In this auspicious scene, may the blessings be everlasting." The singing seemed to foretell the eternal glory of the Great Song Dynasty. This grand celebration, marking the beginning of the Yuanzheng era, was characterized by clear regulations and radiant ceremonies, greeted by people from all directions. Both inside and outside the palace, there was a peaceful atmosphere, with music, singing, and the respectful demeanor of the courtiers, all forming this magnificent scene of prosperity. "The morning sun shines, all things witness. Celebrating the three reigns, with music and rituals. The beginning of the Yuanzheng era, with clear regulations and bright ceremonies. People from all directions come to congratulate, filling the imperial court. Many scholars filled the nine ranks, bowing in reverence to the sound of jade. With respect and admiration, shining brightly. Drums and bells reverberate through the heavens, while etiquette fills the imperial court. Enjoying music and celebrating, blessings are shared." This grand celebration also symbolized the prosperity of the Great Song Dynasty. Five jades presented, three silks respectfully offered. The palace is adorned with musical instruments, se qin, xiao guan, sheng qing, a variety of instruments playing in harmony. Next is the first dance song, called "Qian Wu Ge," set to the music of the Jin Dynasty’s "Zheng De Dance," performed by the Rui Bin ensemble.
This grand dance performance is a divine blessing, a manifestation of accumulated virtues, and the emperor's virtues resonate across the realms. Like a dragon soaring through the heavens, its majesty felt by all nations. The emperor, wise and martial, governs state affairs in silence, yet influences all things, all receiving his grace. Offering prayers to the heavens and singing praises of his virtues. The dance movements are solemn and beautiful, filled with compassion. Following the will of heaven, establishing new systems, ensuring national stability and harmonizing with the heavens. Foreign lands submit, domestic peace prevails, the emperor sits upright, governing the world. Then, the 'Da Yu' dance was performed, as if heaven and man are one, auspicious energy flowing for generations.
This is the song of the second dance, called "Hou Wu Ge", set to the music of the Jin Dynasty's "Da Yu Dance", also performed by the Rui Bin Orchestra.
Finally, the guests together sang the lyrics of "Su Cheng Music", in two parts:
These lyrics praise the emperor's filial piety towards his parents and respectful treatment of the sages, touching both heaven and the hearts of the people. The procession of the dance is orderly, with graceful movements, and a grand scene. The courtyard is filled with treasures, abundant fine wine and delicacies, musical instruments playing harmoniously, the meticulously prepared rituals, solemn and orderly, expressing reverence to the divine, the emperor's grace is vast, illuminating the world.
This sacrificial ceremony is solemn and grand. Observe the sacrificial attendants, each with a dignified demeanor, swift and respectful movements, abundant offerings, arranged in an orderly manner. The entire palace is solemn and dignified, with a sturdy and imposing structure, a sacred atmosphere. Praying for blessings from heaven, officials performing their duties in an orderly manner. Everyone awaits with devout hearts, anticipating the arrival of night, and then lining up for worship. The next morning, with the sun barely showing, everything appears especially ethereal in the morning light. This sacrificial activity is filled with auspicious energy, exquisite offerings, praying for the nation's peace and prosperity. May the emperor's virtuous reign last forever, the nation's fortune to flourish, and his legacy endure for generations.
Next, as the livestock is led to the altar, the "Ritual Music" is performed: "We offer pure sacrifices, and we present filial offerings to the deities. We respectfully present millet and grains, we respectfully cleanse the sacrificial animals. The horses are in their pens, overflowing with abundance. To receive the ancestral sacrifice, to solemnly serve the imperial heart. The fragrance of the incense rises in all directions, the splendid fire is passed around. The spirit is vigilant and clear, the gentle offerings are pleasing." These lyrics express the sincere filial piety of the sacrificer, the awe of the deities, and the solemn attitude towards the sacrificial ritual, praying for blessings from heaven.
Then, the offerings of beans and blood are made, and the "Praising Offering Music" is performed: "As the solemn sacrifice begins, all rituals are conducted. The six ceremonies are adorned with literature, the nine officials announce the sequence. The gentle offerings are shown, the rituals are presented. Respectfully cleanse and purify, respectfully serve the deities. Offer the sacrificial vessels again, present the sacrificial vessels heavily. The festival is vibrant and joyous, the sound flows like liquid gold. Bright and shining, solemn and strict. Pure sincerity in the evening, dignified attire in the morning. The sacred spirit rests, bestowing blessings upon our emperor. Above, bringing peace to the four directions, below, influencing all nations. Forever speaking of filial offerings, filial offerings with grace. The ministers praise in order, solemn and respectful." The lyrics praise the grandeur and solemnity of the sacrifice, expressing reverence for the deities and the desire for national peace and the well-being of the people.
Then, the ceremony to welcome the deities begins, and the "Shao Xia Music" is performed: "The palace is dark, the hall is faint. The precious jade is solemn, the candles and jade shine brightly. The ceremonial robes are divine, the jade hall is fragrant. The circular fire shines in the evening, the square water is clear in the morning. Golden branches lean on the trees, green jade stands in the county. The waves are calm at night, the splendid Han River glimmers in the sky. The respectful rituals commence early, the devout hearts are admiring. We look up to the imperial spirit and bow down to seek its blessings." This music describes the solemn and dignified scene of the sacrificial site, expressing reverence for the deities and praying for blessings.
Finally, the emperor entered the north gate of the temple and performed "Eternal Joy": "The emperor shines with wisdom and filial piety, exuding a majestic presence. The imperial robe is fluttering, sweeping across the Han River. The night is vibrant with joy, and the morning is serene. As they walk through the golden scenery, they step into the jade breeze of 'Shao'. Following the rites, they solemnly made their offerings." The music praised the emperor's wisdom and filial piety, as well as the solemnity of the sacrificial ceremony.
The high priest sang two chapters of the song loudly at the sacrificial site (the lyrics are omitted here because the original text did not provide them). The entire sacrificial process, from preparation to completion, was imbued with a solemn and devout atmosphere, reflecting the ancient emperor's awe of the gods and his prayers for the country.
The emperor's sacrifice was truly magnificent, reminiscent of a grand TV drama; the nine palace gates swung wide open, and various statues of mythical beasts were placed there. The band played music, the dancers danced, the ceremony proceeded in an orderly manner, and the atmosphere was solemn and dignified. The sacrificial offerings were neatly arranged, the aroma filled the air, and their worth was evident at first glance. The officials in charge of the ceremony were meticulous and very serious.
This sacrificial ceremony was to express filial piety to the empress dowager; the sacrificial process was executed with utmost precision, leaving no room for error, and the words were heartfelt. The wine chosen for the sacrifice was of the finest quality, and the entire ceremony brimmed with sincerity as they prayed for divine blessings. The singing soared melodiously, and the music flowed harmoniously, the whole ceremony solemn and grand, expressing the emperor's love for the empress dowager and reverence for the ancestors, truly moving with filial piety!
Next came the music and dance performance dedicated to the empress dowager, accompanied by lyrics that celebrate: "The auspicious signs reveal the spirit, honoring the holy concubine. Carrying the emblem of virtue, spreading the light of honor. The auspicious signs are intertwined above, embellishing the praise in the middle. Forever belonging to the brilliance, connecting the prosperous life."
Then comes the dance of offering to Empress Dowager Zhao, composed by Emperor Ming: expressing the spirit and entwining the symbols, following the ceremonial rites and weaving through the winds. Embracing the radiant brilliance, ascending to the auspicious purple sky. Instructing the forms of the heavens, showcasing martial prowess in the imperial palace. Soaring with golden fragrance, embodying the voice and presence of virtue.
Next is the dance of offering to Empress Dowager Xuan, also composed by Emperor Ming: the heavenly axis gleams, the earthly pivot radiates. Connecting the light to the world, illuminating the celebratory spirit. Filling the central universe with fragrance, entwining the scenes above. Jade praises virtues, while golden flutes convey emblems.
Finally, the emperor returns to the eastern wall to partake in the blessing wine, and performs the dance titled "Celebrating the Time," with lyrics: presenting respectful offerings, celebrating the prosperous time. The imperial sage receives blessings, the emperor's reign embodies peace and prosperity. Residing at the peak of fortune, embodying virtue as the king of auspiciousness. Illuminating the four directions, extending the essence to the eight regions. Enlightening the sea with benevolent sounds, shining radiantly throughout the universe. Spirited celebrations intertwine with blessings, the grand and everlasting, boundless in scope.
When bidding farewell to the spirits, the dance titled "Zhao Xia" is performed, with two verses: great filial piety is expressed, with abundant rituals and joy. The chariot ascends, gliding through the azure sky. Extending to the eight voids, opening the four voids. The flowing scenery, solemnly moving with the breeze.
Enlightening the teachings, refining the demeanor. Cherishing the imperial spirit, forming deep admiration. This signifies that the emperor's teachings must be upright and transparent, behavior should be dignified and solemn, and there should be thoughts and reverence towards the emperor's spirit in heaven.
Then, the feathered banners are removed, the splendid trees are stopped. Disposing of the jade ornaments, boarding the jade carriage. This means that the feathered banners are removed (decorations on ancient ceremonial processions), the elaborate tree decorations for the offering are stopped, and then the emperor turns and boards the jade carriage. Isn’t this scene quite solemn?
Flowing with joy, celebrating the nation's progress. Next, everyone is immersed in a festive and harmonious atmosphere, celebrating the peace and prosperity of the nation. Afterwards, the emperor enters the side hall and performs the piece titled "Resting in Completion." The lyrics are as follows:
The wine and delicacies have been presented, the offerings are laid out in full. The sacrificial ceremony is grand and complete, the music has been played. The blessings have been recited, the ceremony has concluded, the emperor's carriage leaves the main gate and returns to the majestic palace.
The divine scene remains, the grandeur of the Han Pavilion. The altars of the Eight Spirits are guarded, the paths for the Three Deities have been cleared. The emerald canopy shines brightly, the emperor stands solemn and sacred. The jade reins are still, the golden carriage carries the melodious music slowly.
The ritual is sincere and filial, my heart is filled with deep emotion. Inspired by the late emperor’s example, reflecting on his profound virtues. May the gods bestow blessings, shine upon all corners. Looking up to the imperial emblem, looking down to the prosperity of the people.
In conclusion, these lyrics express the emperor's sentiments: This ceremony embodies my filial piety, my heart is filled with solemn reverence. I remember the merits of the late emperor, hoping to inherit his excellent virtues. May heaven bestow blessings to ensure the nation’s stability and prosperity, and may the emperor's grace extend to all the people. The entire ceremony is solemn and reverent, imbued with remembrance of the late emperor and hope for the nation's future.
